UTA going back to the WAC, although this time with more Texas teams in it.

Another shoe drops in the race to get to a new Sun Belt this summer.

Best of luck to UTA. I am going from memory and at my age that can be a very risky thing to do . . hahaha

As I recall, UTA helped the Southland Conference achieve D1 status back in the day when the UTA Mavericks still played Football. I also recall a win by UTA Football over Baylor when we were all in the SLC together. That was many Moons ago.

We did. We were the first to jump up, but high had different rules back then. A requirement was to play six games out of 11 against University Division teams. By us moving up, we got our hynies handed to us in the early 1970’s, it made it easier for everyone e to move up, which was completed by 1974 or ‘75.

Lamar beat Baylor in 1980. We beat TCU in either 73 or 74 and again in 1979.

Especially in basketball, y’all’s schedule seems light. I hope we see each other home and home often.

Would you be, if it were your school (honestly)?

That’s one of my big issues. The other is the WAC has been a DII call-up conference the last few years to stay alive.

Maybe we turn into a big fish in a small pond and start to build our postseason experience in basketball and find a way to return in baseball and volleyball.

Good luck y'all. I hope you start running that conference on the hardwood like NMSU has been doing.

That's the positive spin I've put on our (LR) move to the OVC. The only time we get interest from the public and media in Little Rock is when we are winning big. We have a lot better chance of "winning" in the depleted OVC than in Sun Belt.

I know someone else talked about lipstick on a pig earlier... but I will give a tip of the cap to UTRGV. I have had my feelings too, but they are not as bad an entity as we may all recall from their old American South or Sun Belt days... or even more recently when they were Texas-Pan American.

A bit more competitive, more invested in their product and now with the support of the student body - adding football and women's swim/dive.
I know in state there are colleges we would never share a conference with. So I can imagine that this is a kick in the nads for UTA alumni.

Actually, it was Lamar that beat Baylor, while UTA defeated TCU twice, back in those halcyon SLC days before both Lamar and UTA dropped football.

LR to OVC there’s rivalry potential, it doesn’t feel like a retread, some good fan trips that aren’t awful, some familarish names from non-conference play.

UTA goes back to a brand they ditched, reunite with opponents from when UTA ambitions were lower. It’s a much harder sell I suspect.

I agree about basketball. Even going back to the SLC days, it seems like the only sport I really cared playing y'all in was basketball. Need to get those games on the schedule going forward. But seeing we play UTSA off and on in basketball and they are down the road, I won't hold my breath. We do play games with SFA, ACU, Rice, SMU, UNT, and UH too though so maybe I am wrong and we will play from time to time.

From the UTA fans' perspective, is there any silver lining to playing Grand Canyon or especially Stephen F. Austin? SFA, I recall, had a very memorable victory over Duke IN Cameron Indoor a few years back and had another NCAA Tournament win over Texas A&M a few years before. They might bring some excitement. Maybe?

Absolutely. Really the WAC is not a bad bball conference. SFA,GCU,CBU,ACU ,UVU are all solid basketball teams and a a lot of potential from the rest and hopefully we can get better and add quality to the league. The main thing I worry about the WAC is stability.

Good luck. USM has always gotten the short end of the stick in realignment, and now it feels like we're the reason for someone else's misfortune. It's a dirty business.
All the best.

RE: UTA to the WAC
I know the WAC isn't what UTA fans were hoping for/looking forward to, but I think the WAC is going to be good on stability. Realistically for football the only conferences that could poach the WAC would be C-USA, Big Sky, SWAC, or Southland, and a lot of the easiest options for those conferences came from those conferences. Don't see C-USA picking up any more than 2. And on the non-football side, the WAC is gonna have 13 teams, more than enough to be stable. And if anyone was looking around for non-football schools to poach in the WAC, UTA would be near the top of the list.

Although we never shared a conference, my best wishes to UTA, I'll be rooting for your success in the WAC.

You guys had no part in our misfortune. This has been brewing for a while. Understandably the SBC wants to be a football league. We made our bed now we have to sleep in it04-cheers

Dang... I'm sorry UTA guys. I know I'd be devasted if TXST had to make that move back. I'll definitely miss playing you guys. That 2019 game in San Marcos was a classic. Wouldnt be surprised if that was the most attended game in the conference that year. I hope yall go on and dominate the WAC.

RE: UTA to the WAC
Responsive to my searches, I keep seeing posts on the internet proclaiming that UTA is going to the WAC, but so far, the posts are all from 2011. I'm amazed how quickly ten years have passed since Commissioner Benson moved from the WAC to SBC, and brought UTA along with him. I wonder if this was how he expected things to work out. Who knew that we would grow to over 48,000 enrollment and a nursing school that's twice as big as TCU? And yet, we're still not playing football!?!

I dont see any news about it either. not on any UTA site or blogs and nobody in the WAC has said anything about it. it would for sure be running start kick in the nads if true. it was nice being in the WAC before everyone left. it was nice to beat utah state 3 times and san jose state twice..a couple schools we dont see very often

Wherever UTA goes will just be temporary, especially if we find our way back to the gridiron. I mean, if we do finally step up to football and add the additional women's sports, there will be a number of transition years. It could be worse: we could be a Baptist school in Lynchburg, VA that no conference wanted to touch with a ten meter pole!
