A question for Southern Miss fans.
This is not a flame or troll at all. I was watching the new class for the college football Hall of Fame today and I couldn’t help but wonder why Jeff Bower is not in the HOF? Does anybody know why he hasn’t made it yet? Am I missing something?

In agreement with you, he should definitely be included in the HOF. Not sure why he hasn't been considered or put in there yet. Especially in the fact that is and was still involved in CFB. He was a part of the first CFP selection committe.

Figured it out. A coach to be considered must have a .600 win percentage over their career in at least 100 games and have coached for 10+ seasons. Bower's is 119-83-1 for .560 over 18 seasons.

Dunno.

I wonder if there's only so many people they can induct at one time and he just doesn't have the votes.

I’ve seen coaches in with worse win percentages and He was the C-USA coach of the decade. I feel like exceptions can be made. He has the credentials for sure. It’s also not unheard of for a Southern Miss coach to be in the HOF considered Thad Vann is in as well.

Jeff Bower had one of the best game faces of all time. He should definitely be in the USM HOF.

Bower's game face was known around these parts as the steely blued stare of death.

MSU's Croom was just added. Surely he didn't have that good of an overall record?

RE: A question for Southern Miss fans.
I met Bower a couple of times. Even though I was the bigger person, he was kinda intimidating.

I also met Corky. Nice man. Very personable. The next time I saw him, I was with some friends at the Poboy Express on 4th Street, and he saw me walk in, came up shook my hand, asked me what was I going to order, when I told him, he let me know that was the wrong choice, here was why, and he recommended this poboy. What I was going to order was something I had before and liked it, but I went with what Corky recommended. He was right. When he was leaving he asked me how it was, told him, and thanked him. Told me no problem, and since I took his advice he expected to see my @ss at the game that week.

I ran into him a few more times in my tenure at USM, always recognized me and always spoke.

Croom was an All-American Center who played under Bear Bryant. Got in as a player, not a coach.

As an anecdote, there’s a video out there that i think one of the LA Tech media guys recorded at one of the conference tournaments and it’s two bobble heads of Corky and Favre having a “conversation” and it’s probably the funniest thing I’ve seen.

Got someone to post it.

You said Favre, but I'm thinking that's supposed to be John Cox.

But hey I giggled nonetheless.

That makes a lot more sense, thanks!

Did Bower stick around in Hattiesburg after being let go? If so, why was he never called up to take over when things went south with Ellis Johnson or Hopson quitting? I don't know how it all went down so I don't know if there's bad blood.

I believe he and his family still live here. He’s involved to some degree with the program on and off. There has been a vocal group who call for him every coaching search or every down turn. But, all in all I think he’s enjoying retirement.

To my knowledge he's still living in Hattiesburg.

If memory serves we fired EJ immediately after the season ended and began a coaching search. I believe what I understood was alumni banded together and raised the capital for EJ's buyout.

When Hop left there were capable coaches left that took over. One actually landed a HC job in the midst of the season and left immediately, why stay and work on something if you aren't going to be the man at that school.

I don't think there's bad blood, but in the midst of the 2020 season, you can't bring in a HC with a previous staff and try to integrate him into the system, that's just my theory. Plus I've understood that Bower is actually enjoying the retired life and to be sucked in to coach x number of games and that's it, probably wasn't worth it to him.

Bower still does stuff for the school from time to time, but it's not like it's his job.

I mean he was a player and coach there, he has ties.

He just built a new house on the west side of Hattiesburg. He has been at every home game, sitting in the suites, once Giannini was gone.
