Yeah... I figured this would happen after all the dust settled this summer. People were counting on it like a "done deal," but after August it was pretty clear that "expansion" of the CFP was off the tracks.

This is what happens when idiots like Aresco bite the hand that feeds them. I wouldn’t be surprised if playoff expansion is dead and The P5 breakaway in 2025.

It's fine, it would have been nice.
Big12 Champion should still be able to make a 4-team playoff with an undefeated run.

Why would you want to set yourself up for the standard of having to go undefeated while the SEC and B1G can get one loss teams in? Why should a sport "pick and choose" 4 out of 66-72 teams competing?
Can you name one other sport that leaves any major conference/division champs out of playoffs, college or pro? NO.
It just devalues the whole season to have no real ending of the sport. On other hand we can see how great the NFL is in this regard. And don't tell me more access to a playoff devalues regular season games its the exact opposite. We saw that in the NFL last night.
I am from a CFB state Iowa. I follow both teams. I use to watch all CFB morning to night. Anymore if it doesn't involve ISU or Iowa I find very little reason to watch because the sport has no real ending. I do find reason to watch the NFL and I buy the NFL ticket because its real! A real sport with a real ending. Its not polls, picking and choosing or about creating larger disadvantages between the teams involved.

All true, but the money and politics will likely never get all aligned to make some type of ridiculous March Madness style tournament with all 11 conference champions get auto-bids. Its just foolish to ask for.
Its still a real sport because its so profitable. I'd argue College Football is a better sport than College Baseball. College Baseball has a true champion but does it matter more than a College Football title? No, Football pays the bills for the majority of the College Sports. So don't knock the sport that's paying all the bills. So go enjoy your Women's Rowing tournament and Men's Tennis tournament but know that dirty College Football made all that possible.

Given how much of its revenue goes to the NCAA, it may be more college basketball that is funding a lot of non-revenue championships.

I get what he’s saying though, a 12 team playoff would be much more exciting and help with the opt out issue.

Nahh. That whole group meets again in just a few weeks. With another meeting just a few weeks away, there was no reason for anyone to cave or give up a major concession at this point. For Aresco---he has nothing to lose. The 5-1-6 deal is NOT going to get any worse in the next meeting. He might even get a concession of some sort by continuing to hold out for the original 6-6 proposal (which likely has more conferences supporting it than any other option at this point). Besides, Aresco is not "alone" on this. All 5 G5's would prefer the original 6-6 proposal (the MW commissioner actually was one of the 4 people who crafted the original proposal). The Big12 is going to come out just fine no matter the outcome because every single version give the Big12 champ either guaranteed access or near guaranteed access to the CFP---so no worries for us.

It may not happen now, but it will expand. Too much $$ out there for it to stay as is.

Call me skittish, but I want anything that makes the Big 12 stay a P5. After what ESPN did to the Big East, I don't want to see that happen again to UH or any of the great universities that are coming with us or currently in the Big 12. An automatic bid to the tourney keeps us P5 and I would think helps us in contract negotiations.

I’ve seen it speculated elsewhere that it may be other issues that are hanging up final approval, such as distribution questions and/or specific treatment of the Rose Bowl. Perhaps if those issues can be resolved so will the primary structural one.
