Welcome to the WAC! COGS So far GCU is playing very well. Currently 73-51 with about 9 minutes left.
Saturday's game at NMSU is probably going to be even more difficult.

From the GCU article about the game:

"Two NCAA tournament teams from last spring took the GCU Arena floor, but only one played like it could be back this spring."

95 points. Wow.

I definitely don't see us returning. We have always been outsized, but lately we are getting outhustled and outcoached. That is unlike us. Hopefully we just end up with a decent season. One of the key guys that could have helped us out in the paint last night was out for COVID. That's not why we lost though. GCU planned and executed well and showed they deserve the chance to return.
Yesterday was by far GCU's best game. Everyone was hitting their shots which is not normal. We shall see if GCU can replicate that on Saturday against Tarleton in front of a national audience.

Living in Arizona. So, I have probably seen more Lopes games than Aggie games in recent years. Thursday, I watched to GCU game during the commercials of the Aggie game. And, from what I saw, the ACU game was the Lopes best performance as a team this season. McGlothan and Cherry were making the presence felt. And, Stone probably had his best game as a Lope since he was first signed a year ago. NMSU has as much talent as GCU, maybe more. But with GCU essentially playing two point guards in their starting lineup (Blacksher and Woods), GCU's offense appears to be more fluid than NMSU's; when Blacksher and Woods teammates are making shot. Blacksher and Woods create a lot of pick and rolls and off the ball cuts for their bigs with their dribble penetration. On the other hand, NMSU scores more points on average than GCU but it is done more through one-on-one isolations and perimeter ball rotation for the open look. But I will say, besides Montre Gipson's occasional scoring bursts, NMSU might have played their best team defense of the season on Thursday. The help defense by our big men was good.

My issue is that's 3 teams in a row that were hitting their shots like no other night. Who was the common opponent? How does one of the nation's top defenses have such luck happen to them 3 games in a row? Our fans think it was just an "off night" each time. The other teams were just "bigger/faster" than us. They were just "shooting well". To some degree that is true, but to at least an equal degree, allowing such great shooting on the opponent's part is on us. Why would that pattern stop with NMSU?

Maybe you are not one of the nation’s top defenses after all.

Or, maybe your defense came together early in the season, and was effective against early offenses, but offenses have have caught up and are surpassing a plateaued defense.

Could be, but that didn't happen last year. The difference last year was a couple of players that gave us a little better inside presence. We have run this defense for a long time now and have veterans running it. What I am seeing are lapses and diminished aggressiveness. I am making comparisons to teams we played last year, as well as new teams this year. Teams have indeed figured out how to disrupt us (usually our game), and we haven't adapted appropriately yet recently.

First time since 2015 that Chicago State has had 2 conference wins. 4* NMSU transfer was held scoreless until the last 1:40. Good on Chicago State and no hate against Lamar. It's nice to see the perennial WAC basement team winning! Their team has heart! Lot of sportsmanship during this game so that is really good to see!

I do have to say, CJ Roberts has had a decent year there, averaging 14 ppg and going for 20+ numerous times, but on a team with no D1 wins, who can't beat a totally depleted Chicago State team at home, that's little consolation I'd think. But he wasn't going to see the court at NMSU much...

On the NMSU side, Teddy Allen is showing them how its done. Enough said. Go Aggies!

Would ACU please take theses refs with them when they leave back to Texas? Jesus the refs calling every single slightest contact both ways have dragged this game out and disrupted any flow.

Abilene just hasn't learned how not to foul and almost every possession yet. Often, that gets the refs calling everything close on both sides. They play that way in all of their games. Although, when you have 90 and 82% free throw shooters like Allen and Rice, you would think they wouldn't foul them so much. Not sure if its poor coaching or poor player control, but it's a big problem for Abilene.

I never said they were your refs. They’re conference refs. I was merely stating how they referees were calling ticky tack fouls on both sides. Don’t have you get your panties all ruffled up.

Tanner doesn't really care if they foul that much as long as they play aggressive defense. It's been that way for a while.

So why should the refs go back to Texas if they are conference refs? I think you need to pull your own panties down a little. It is what it is, deal with it. You guys won the game and there was no threat that you wouldn't. So, you had to wait an extra 3 minutes. Do you want a Kit Kat bar to help pass the time?

Wow, Outsider is testy today.

Nah, just don't like people being passive aggressive, especially when they don't need to be.

I never said they were your refs. They’re conference refs. I was merely stating how they referees were calling ticky tack fouls on both sides. Don’t have you get your panties all ruffled up.

The refs were very tacky against Tarleton and same tonight. We aren't used to these sort of calls in back to back games. Plus there is the added animosity of NM vs TX so don't think much of this exchange.

Listening to GCU destroy Tarleton while I'm waiting for the Utah Valley game. 42-17 right now. GCU playing very crisply. Raining 3's.

Jesus try using some reading comprehension. I never said take them back to Texas. I said take them with you when you all go back to Texas. It was a light hearted jab at the refs calling super tight game but I didn’t know it was gonna send you off the deep end. Chill out bro. And yes I’ll pull my panties down if you want. Kind of weird but if it’ll make you happy. And btw I would love a Kit Kat.
