UCF Gus Malzahn gets a strong RPO QB Transfer from Ole Miss: John Rhys Plumlee
Gus Malzahn landed a very good RPO QB in John Rhys Plumlee, who is transferring to UCF from Ole Miss.

Plumlee played QB at Ole Miss in 2019 prior to Lane Kiffin, who then moved him to WR the last 2 seasons.

While much of UCF's offense was a mash-unit last year due to injuries, one thing that Gus didn't have was a real RPO option...and now he will have at least 2: Plumlee and incoming Georgia HS Star QB Tommy Castellanos, who arrived on campus today.

It will be interesting to see how all of these newcomers will do following a full Spring Practice...as Plumlee has 2 years of eligibility.

What's interesting is that they're getting blown out in a lot of those games in the highlights.

One of the fastest QB’s I’ve ever seen. He ran an official 4.3 in high school. He will absolutely kill it in Gus’ system. No way he’s a worst thrower than Keene. We just upgraded big time at QB and added a lot of competition. He’s graded as a Top 10 transfer qb and rated 0.8900 so highly rated as a transfer

Don't get too excited. If Plumlee is your starting QB....then you're in trouble.

If he’s our starting QB then he beat out the kid who wasnt expected to start and went 7-3 with a win over Florida.

We’ll be fine. #UCFast might just be back

247 has no idea how to rate anyone. They have our transfer going to USF a 3* when he stopped getting snaps after the 3rd game because he sucked.

Yea this guy is a great runner, but not a good QB. UCF would probably be 6-6 with him at the helm.

We were 9-4 with a not good QB who couldn't run. That's why we're optimistic.

Wildcat QB, a better Gatewood. 53% completion is awful.

Keene the Gator Killer is the QB. The offense runs through Bowser. Gus is just adding pieces on Offense to confuse the Defense. Unfortunately he’s confused a lot of fans. Just Trust in Gus. Don’t get overly connected or emotional about a certain player.

That was the missing piece in Gus's offense...especially with true freshmen Mikey Keene, who did a fine job filling in after Dillon Gabriel was hurt but had a minus -36 yds rushing on 35 carries.

Plumlee averaged 6.6 yds on 154 carries (1,023 yds) in 2019 when he had 8 starts.

No clue if Plumlee will be the starter or have 10-15 package plays per game...the good news is this will give Gus another option in his QB room to use.

I for one am not sold on Plumlee. I think it is good to have options, but a good college QB needs to be more than an athlete. It is much more important to be a good game manager. Reading defenses, going through progressions, Not making the big mistakes. Much more important than how fast you are. If he does well with that than he will be a huge pickup. If not then Mikey Keene will start.

The Gus Bus backfilling with this guy isn’t going to frighten opposing DCs much.

Memphis got a Peter Parrish from LSU....supposedly a HS 4 star that can run and throw. He was 4th string QB that was promoted to backup after QB ahead of him got a foot injury (out for the season) and another QB went to transfer portal.

Getting back to Plumee, if he's all that and a bag of chips, why did Plumlee lose his starting job?

He lost his starting job to Matt Corral, who is likely going to be a top 10 NFL draft pick.

All transfers just roster spot holders until they prove otherwise..

A few years back, Ole Miss had Chad Kelly - self proclaim best QB in college football and a sure 1st rounder by the talk heads -- he was last round pick and cut by Denver. But good luck on anointing Plumee as your program savior.

UCF always has the talent to compete. The 0-12 year was a fluke
