At least the WBB team won today, 72-68 at Ohio.

RE: The Good Basketball News Today
Again, no ESPN3 and wasn't able to listen, but very glad to see the losing streak end with a solid win.

Not to rain (it would freeze anyway) on the parade, but ...

NIU got 4 pts in 37 minutes from 5 bench players. They also "produced" 1 assist, 2 turnovers, 4 rebounds, 2/2 freethrows and 1/8 shooting (all pts from Emily Meinert). Seems they are being used only to rest the 5 starters, with 4 others "out."

Just out of curiosity (if anyone has an update): where are Grace Hunter, Paulina Castro, Moriah Prewitt and Brooke Stonebraker?

Anyway, now on to We-Moo on Weds, then home next Sat vs Too-de-loo (cheap and lazy, but I couldn't resist after the brief high of a good 71-68 win).

Obviously, Hunter has an injury—-was in a boot early in the season and hasn’t dressed. Paulina hasn’t dressed all season—-must be an injury—but nothing obvious. Have no idea on Moriah. As for Brooke, just not polished enough yet….but would have thought some more playing time in a couple of the blowouts.

I think this is the first time I ever seen NIU(Men or Women) out-rebound a team by more than 20 rebounds.
I guess Coach Carlsen really worked on rebounding after the rebounding gaffe at the end of the Ball State game.

When Ajah and Mikayla are able to stay on the court and log serious minutes they can stack up a lot of rebounds. Far too often Ajah gets second foul too early (and usually gets a cheap one—-sometimes tough call—-sometimes just not “Being there”) and Mikayla goes in waves of inconsistency.

This plays into my comment above that Brooke just hasn’t shown enough progress yet to provide ANY valuable minutes in the lane.

MP, please do not take this the wrong way because I am by no means questioning you. I just feel that being the tallest player by 3" on your team, you would find someway to put her in. Even if it is just a rebounding situation or a situation just to keep he hands up and block a lane for a play

RE: The Good Basketball News Today
I'm not in a position to demand anything, and the coach makes her/his own decision(s) on who to play. That's their job (Carlsen, Tandez?). But I can question those decisions like any other fan.

Looking at the stats for 11 games, in which Brooke Stonebraker logged 52+ minutes in 8 games, she hit 5 of 11 shots for .455, which is a higher % than eight other players including three of the regular starters. She also hit 2 of 4 freethrows and had three blocks (second only to Chelby Koker's 4; Koker logged 356+ mins./11 games). Stonebraker also had 3 rebounds, all on offense, 6 personal fouls, 3 steals and 3 turnovers. She scored a total 12 pts, but look how little she played.

Just for her shooting and defense, I can see Schaefer Beer's point. There is also the "ethereal" impact of having another "big" out there, even as a sub. Experience = learning, and I don't think she could do any worse than the rest of the alleged bench. Is she injured? Ineligible? Transferring?

My thoughts are -- and anyone can trash at will -- that when a coach and her regime are in the 7th-year stretch like this one, with a mediocre record at best, dealing with no different circumstances (Covid-19, budget crunch) than many others, it's more than just about one or two players. Carlsen knows the record, and so does her top staff guy, Adam Tandez. So ... are they going with their best and hoping for the best, not taking chances with a thus-far relative unknown(s)?

The whatever-dollar question is: what are the reasons that Carlsen's success at DII Lewis has never translated to NIU, which has (arguably) more resources? Is anyone asking that internally?

I totally agree Schaef---and of course, I'm not at any practice to see progress or really watching games closely enough to understand this stuff (I'm really a fan not a basketball guru). It's much, much easier analyzing stuff from box scores and talking about crap I really know nothing about from behind a keyboard.04-jawdrop

I think the outlier of all her games is the Eastern Illinois game where she got 17 minutes (Ajah only played 19 and fouled out and Mikayla was inured so she had to play). Other than the Drake game, which was a massacre, she has only seen mop up duty, so it seems. And, in the Eastern gam, Brooke had four fouls in those 17 minutes.

I certainly would hope that we had someone, anyone that can take up space and provide two-three minute stretches a couple times a game.

RE: The Good Basketball News Today
Good comments about box score fans. I understand those fans, and probably am one of them.

Years ago me and a coach would scout future opponents; his deal was key players, style and team work ... the actual game ... mine was the numbers, what each player did in the minutes on court. What the stats mean, what they say. Kept the game stats for us also, helped with practice setups. Great opportunity for someone too short and clumsy who loved basketball. Got to be a habit.

Love WBB. Even teams not named NIU. Played below the rim like us normal people. But the other has become like a lost dog following around. So break the habit. Plenty of box score analysts out there. There's a ton of games even on just ESPN+ to enjoy. Maybe NIU can get up and off ESPN3.

NIU WBB is what it is and will go where it goes. No box score analysis or comments will change that. Advice if anyone wants it: just enjoy the games.

Go Huskies?!

I love the box score analysts---and would love to really sit in on some practices and watch the detail that is given throughout...

Just an example here---if I were looking at Brooke's box score from the Eastern game the thing that pops out to me is the four fouls in 17 minutes...WITHOUT SEEING THE GAME--here would be my guess

---slow to the ball
---step slower than you she may be guarding
---reaching --playing defense with hands instead of feet
---poor positioning

It's hard to get four fouls in that short amount of time.

(again, that would be a blind assessment based on numbers on a tablet)

I would imagine that she practices every day against Ajah and Mikayla and that should make her better.

Great analysis, I would have said the reason she got 4 fouls in 17 minutes is that she is aggressive and plays hard. So little I know about basketball, but learning alot from this board.

Ha! There’s that, too. Or probably two fouls of each kind!

RE: The Good Basketball News Today
Watched the Illinois State, Harvard, WIU, EIU and Drake games. (WIU as Compass Challenge host supplied free live video feed, but audio was lousy when there was any). Don't get ESPN3.

IMO, focusing on those 4 personal fouls in 17 minutes vs EIU is a little unfair to Stonebraker. She had only 2 total in 35 minutes in 7 other games. She also averaged 45.5% shooting over 8 games. She doesn't average many ppg, but her minutes per game are also low and come in short bursts. Like to see what she can do first off the bench if she's left in for 4-5 minutes at a time.

BTW, no it's not hard to get 4 fouls in 17 minutes, especially for a 6-3. Give me two strong guards willing to drive inside for layup attempts and I'll put any two of your "bigs" in foul trouble in the first half. Or they'll back off and the guards will get some points. Maybe both, like E.C. Hill, a terrific driver, one of the best.

E.C. definitely had game. A great guard. Was she a freshman on the 89-90 team? That was one hell of a team.

Totally agree with you pvk---and the point I was trying to make is that not seeing the game or many of them it's easy to come up with box score guesses on what could have happened and I just presented one side.
