Overall, the portal is probably a net positive for Bowling Green this year. The emphasis appears to be on the offensive line. Stronger talent there will make the team more competitive in 2022.

Some Falcons are departing, but I imagine most will not stay in FBS.

What I think is happening. Kind of stratification of players by ability and rebalancing them according to their fit with other teams, at different competition levels.

1). The MAC teams are losing some players who obviously are valued by P5 teams. This hurts the MAC's star power.

2). The more marginal MAC players are moving down to get playing time. There obviously is FCS and D-II, especially GLIAC, in the MAC's backyard.

3). Another strata are marginal P5 players who are going G5 to get more playing time.

#2 and #3 are really fairness issues in that players who may not be getting playing time at their current school can move to what they perceive as a 'better fit."

If a QB is #3 on the depth chart at Alabama, does he stay or go say G5 and a chance to win the starting job?

Or a PWO at a MAC school doesn't earn a scholarship after two years, may wish to see if a GLIAC school will offer one.

Would Big Ben or Randy Moss had stayed in the MAC in this era of free agency? I have to wonder.

I agree.

As I may have been hinting above, the MAC will NOT suffer from this wholesale movement of players up and down the CFB hierarchy.

We will pick up a 'number' of P5 players who can be good G5 players. And even some FCS players like EMU's Hamilton. This will help depth and make the 2-deeps more solid.

Where the MAC (and other G5 conferences) may hurt is in star power. We may not see the next Big Ben or Randy Moss or Mack or whomever stay 3 or 4 years.

Former NIU and 2021 MAC Freshman of the Year, Jay Ducker, commits to the only school that offered him in the portal-Memphis.

This is where we are, thanks to the NCAA hiring liberal arts PHD's to run their athletics organization. They don't have a clue to the future, unlike Pete Rozelle, Paul Tagliabue or Roger Godell, all of whom were businessmen.

I don't want to sound like Chicken Little, but when your organization does not have a leader with a clear long term vision for the sport, you are in trouble. Do you remember Ali, Joe Frazier, Larry Holmes, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran, George Foreman, etc... Name a boxer you know today, I will wait.

Boxing had a free for all with Bob Arum and Don King doing their own thing and today is not truly a sport with any significant interest. I see college football following the same pattern with the SEC and B1G doing the Arum-King thing. My opinion only.

Huh.

He was sent down to the minors to get some experience.

Just like James Morgan.
