CQ Interview this morning
I couldn't listen very intently but did pick up a couple of items.

Said that he would likely retain some assistants on the current staff but also wanted to bring in some assistants he had worked with. Said he would like to round out the staff in the next couple of weeks.

He talked to a "particular" player about coming back instead of pursuing other places via the portal and said that player had pretty much made up their mind that they wanted to play at a higher level.

He feels it is best to build a team with high school players although they will see what is out there in the portal.

One Division I coach who said that coaches who continue with the philosophy of building teams by focusing on bring in freshmen and developing them while not utilizing the portal would find themselves looking for other kinds of work in the future.

We’re dead last in the early signing period:

Didn't you use this quote (somebody did) talking about Oliver and basketball?
Was this Div I coach a football coach or basketball? Power 5.. If he coaches one sport does he think and is he qualified to think it applies to all sports? Very generalized statement. 1 coach out of a pool of hundreds.
Not agreeing or disagreeing just don't see any reason to elevate that quote from random coach.

Yea, I did mention this earlier. Not going to take the time to search out who said it. What difference does it make — football or basketball? The portal is equally available to both. The portal is being called “free agency” by some. Think that coach that I mentioned was emphasizing the new reality in college sports and the fact that old recruiting approaches could be doomed along with coaches who continue using them — like bringing in high school players, developing them, and counting on keeping them all four years.

Well the big difference is 13 scholarships (basketball) versus 63 or 85 scholarships (football). Hell of a lot easy for the basketball coach to reload in the portal vs a football coach.
I think coaches need a balance. Build a base bring in what you need as you need it.

I think Sanders did a good job of sprinkling in transfers to fill needs in the team. Malik Murray from GA Southern was great, Mike Price from App State was spot on and of course Jared Folks from Temple is legendary. I looked through our current roster of 99 and counted about 70 freshmen/red-shirt freshmen, many of whom contributed, including the starting quarterback. I think this is what we need to continue to do. Bring in freshmen like that but put in some well placed transfers to bolster the team.

Of course we’ll have to wait and see how this transfer portal shakes out. I don’t see the 13 vs 63/85 scholarships as such a big difference. It depends on who you lose and the position played. The football coach will have more people, the younger players, per position to replace the transfers than the basketball coach unless he’s losing his Heisman QB candidate, running back candidate, etc. With fewer backups and scholarships, the basketball coach could actually end up in the toughest position in certain scenarios in that he has such fewer backups and has little room for error in the portal. Bottom line - this revised transfer portal looks to maybe revolutionize recruiting practices in college sports, especially football and basketball.

Thanks for the link. The more I learn about Coach Quarles, the more I think this will turn out to be a great hire.

What a stark contrast to most on here regarding this hire.

My opinion is greatly influenced by a friend of mine, a former coach, an ETSU alumnus, and an active ETSU supporter, whose judgement I've learned to respect and value. In this case, my friend has been uniquely positioned to have observed Quarles over the entirety of his career. His observations mostly come from an opponent's perspective, and he offers nothing but the highest praise for Quarles' coaching ability and his quality as a human being.

He also said Coach Quarles would never have taken the job unless he was confident he could succeed, which is even more meaningful because Quarles' standard for success is very high.

On a side note, in the interview, Coach Quarles said he expects to retain some current staff members. I hope that will include Running Backs Coach, Gary Downs, who is, I think, exactly the type of individual that Coach Quarles will be looking for.
