OHiO U GAME
EMU opens MAC play at Ohio U on Tuesday, December 28th, at 7 pm. .

Ohio posted a MAC leading 9-2 non-conference record, losing to only LSU and Kentucky. It’s only significant win was over Belmont in it’s first game. It’s remaining wins were over mostly powder-puff teams, including beating St.Francis (Pa.) at home by only three-points. Bart Torvik ranks St. Francis the 286th best team in the nation.

Ohio has played without F Dwight Wilson, last season’s star, who’s undergone foot surgery, and also back-up guard Lundun LaDay the last 5- games.

Ohio has averaged 73.5 ppg, opponents 66.5 ppg.

Ohio’s offense does’t shoot two’s well, but it does turn the ball over only 11.3 times per game.

Ohio averages 16 FT’s per game as it’s opponents average 16 fouls per game. Ohio shoots it FT’s at 7& 8 percent.

Ohio’s defense keeps opponents scoring down by making steals (7.9 steals per game) forcing opponent turnovers (16 turnovers per game) and committing but 12.3 fouls per game, resulting in their opponents averaging just 13.5 foul-shots per game.

Ohio’ only shoots but 48 percent on two’s and 33 percent on three’s.

Ohio’s interior defense is not good as opponents have shot 53.8 percent on two’s. It’s defense does a better job holding it’s opponent’s to shooting 31 percent on three’s.

In order to beat Ohio, EMU will have to not turn the ball over more than 10 times, and not commit more than 12 fouls as they did playing Valpo.

Ohio plays at a fast pace.

Ohio has four good players in it’s starting line-up.

Sophomore 6’1” PG Marc Sears leads Ohio in scoring averaging 18.5 ppg, including scoring 33 point’s in Ohio’s last outing. He shoots three’s at a whooping 45 percent, but only 30 percent of the field goals he takes are three’s. He averages 5 foul-shots per game., the only weakness in his game is turnovers..

Xavier transfer F 6’8” Jason Carter averages 13.6 ppg. He’s shoots two’s at 49 percent, and converts three’s at only 21 percent.

6’8” F Ben Vander Plas is an overall outstanding offensive player. He’s averages 12.4 ppg, shoot’s two’s at 53 percent, and three pointers at 38 percent). He shoots more three’s than he does two’s.

6’1” SG Miles Brown averages 8.6 ppg and shoots two’s at 60 percent and three’s at 36 percent.6’5”

Starter 6’5” F Ben Roderick averages 7.6 ppg. He shoots both two’s and three’s poorly.

Ohio has three players who come off the bench. One is 6’7” F Clayton, who shoots mostly three’s and converts them at 48 percent. Also, 6’8” F Towns, who shoots three’s at 37.5 percent. and 5’11” PG Schmock convert’s two’s at only 30 percent, but mostly shoots three’s and converts them at 34.5 percent.

EMU needs to disrupt Ohio’s offense shortly after Sears crosses mid-court, by making him give up the ball, and then deny Sears from getting the ball back. Easier said then done.

It’s still not known whether both McBride and Golson will be able to return to play against Ohio.

For Ohio U Dwight Wilson 6'8 250 Sr. has not played this year and out with an injury. Last year he was Third Team All Mac and averaged 14.4 points and 7.6 rebounds.

We will be a good test for Ohio but we’re inexperienced and they’re experienced. In addition, Ohio can play fast and I believe full court defense (I’m checking on this). EMU can not play full court defense an extended amount of time due to the lack of quality guard depth. We’re also too inconsistent scoring in the paint. We are a better than middle of the MAC team this season. I like our direction!!

Ohio 71
EMU 59

Agree EMU is far from a finished product. Needs to find the right offensive and defensive systems to play, and determine who should mostly play the Center position. Do believe that EMU plays best when EMU plays small board and as such, both NScott and YJihad should share the Center losition, and both Njie and Okongo should play far less.

Disagree to the extent that EMU is capable of not turning the ball over excessively which is a sign of Ann experienced team.

Do believe EMU is a very good scoring in the paint of EMU if it spreads the court and does not play a low-post offense. This allows EMU guards and wings to get to the hoop.

Noah and Monty are better than Ohio’s Sears and Brown. McBride and Spottsville better that Roderick and Schmock. Ohio’s Plas and Carter are a wash when compared to Golson and N.Scott.

Problem is that Golson and McBride won’t be playing against Ohio. .

If turnovers the same, one can’t say Ohio has more experienced team. Also, Carter is a new Ohio player.

Like that Ohio opponents have shot 53.8 percent on two’s, as EMU is a very good at shooting two’s when they play an open offense and spread the court.

The game’s outcome may well depend on whether EMU plays the right offense and defense, and doesn’t get hosed by the refs.

EMU far better than St. Francis (Pa) that Ohio beat by kinky three-points in a game played at Ohio.

RE: OHiO U GAME
For comparison, I am listing out Ohio’s OOC opponent rankings and results below.
For comparison to EMU: https://csnbbs.com/thread-938733.html

EMU definitely had the harder schedule, but Ohio definitely out performed EMU in terms of results. I assume Ohio wins this. But by no means do I think Ohio is out of EMU’s league if McBride and Golsom plays (and Dwight Wilson continues to be absent)

Belmont ( 35 ) WON 92-80
@Cleveland St ( 159 ) WON 67-56
Robert Morris ( 325 ) WON 85-71
@Kentucky ( 23 ) LOST 77-59
Mount St Mary ( 314 ) 73-59
CCD ( NA ) 88-68
@LSU ( 3 ) 66-51
St Francis PA ( 290 ) 78-75
@Stetson ( 286 ) 55-45
Marshal ( 209 ) 75-65
South Carolina Upstate ( 316 ) 85-70

RE: OHiO U GAME
Believe that under Covid protocols both McBride and Golson must wait 10 plus 3 days before playing. If true, both will be eligible to play in Buffalo game, not in the Ohio game.

Even if short-handed, EMU is capable of playing well against Ohio. Just hoping the team doesn’t tire as the did at the end of the Valpo game.

Would like to see EMU at least split the Ohio and Buffalo games, and then go on a 4-game winning streak.

RE: OHiO U GAME
Odds and Ends:

Growing pains: In four of EMU’s 6 losses all on the road, EMU outscored Indiana in the second-half by a good margin (11-points); led N.Kentucky by 11-point at the half; only trailed UCSD by by 1-point at the end of the first half playing without Noah; and led Valpo by 2-points at the first-half and was leading by 10-points playing s/o both McBride and Golson, with 12 minutes remaining in the game.

EMU is ranked 145th in having the toughest non-conference schedule of any Div.1 team in the nation. Such ranking is the toughest non-conference schedule of all MAC teams. Ohio has the 197th toughest non-conference schedule.

Such lessens the weight that should be given to Ohio having a better non-conference record. Both teams lost to some of the best teams in the nation.

Also, Heath is still figuring out how EMU should play and who should play the Center position.

EMU’s toughest non-conference win was over Western Illinois (72-68) ranked the 103rd best team in the nation. In pre-season, EMU beat Oakland now rated the 77th best team in the nation.

Ohio’s weakest win at home, 78-75, was against 289th ranked St. Francis (Pa.).

There’s many college men’s bb rating services. Some are better known than others are. Who’s to say which is more accurate than another.

EMU’s highest national ranking is by Roundtable that ranks EMU the 113th best team in the nation.

Ohio’s lowest national ranking is by Cresswell that ranks Ohio the 134th best team in the nation.Cresswell ranks EMU at 174.

RE: OHiO U GAME
Even though Ohio has won 9 non-conference games, Ohio fans are not pleased with the spotty shooting by Ohio players in many games.

In Ohio’s last game against UPSTATE ranked 314th in the nation, Ohio was a 22-point favorite, but won by only 15-points.

As Ohio built substantial leads in each half only to see UPSTATE score more points than Ohio did in the second portions of each half.

To win, EMU needs to limit PG’s Sears and Ohio’s three-point scoring , not lose the turnover battle, and keep the number of foul-shots made by each team close.

Do think EMU would be in a far better position to win if McBride and Golson were able to play.

We are a 14.5 point underdog. Let's hope it's better than that.

If turnovers the same, one can’t say Ohio has more experienced team. Also, Carter is a new Ohio player.

Jason Carter is only sort of a new player for Ohio. He spent 3 years in Athens playing for Ohio, transferred to Xavier for 2 years, then transferred back to Ohio for this season.

Ohio lost two top starters and scorers from last season. Jason Carter does not shoot two’s anywhere near as well as Wright did last som.c and he shoots two’s at only 21 percent.
