OHiO U GAME
EMU opens MAC play at Ohio U on Tuesday, December 28th, at 7 pm. .
Ohio posted a MAC leading 9-2 non-conference record, losing to only LSU and Kentucky. It’s only significant win was over Belmont in it’s first game. It’s remaining wins were over mostly powder-puff teams, including beating St.Francis (Pa.) at home by only three-points. Bart Torvik ranks St. Francis the 286th best team in the nation.
Ohio has played without F Dwight Wilson, last season’s star, who’s undergone foot surgery, and also back-up guard Lundun LaDay the last 5- games.
Ohio has averaged 73.5 ppg, opponents 66.5 ppg.
Ohio’s offense does’t shoot two’s well, but it does turn the ball over only 11.3 times per game.
Ohio averages 16 FT’s per game as it’s opponents average 16 fouls per game. Ohio shoots it FT’s at 7& 8 percent.
Ohio’s defense keeps opponents scoring down by making steals (7.9 steals per game) forcing opponent turnovers (16 turnovers per game) and committing but 12.3 fouls per game, resulting in their opponents averaging just 13.5 foul-shots per game.
Ohio’ only shoots but 48 percent on two’s and 33 percent on three’s.
Ohio’s interior defense is not good as opponents have shot 53.8 percent on two’s. It’s defense does a better job holding it’s opponent’s to shooting 31 percent on three’s.
In order to beat Ohio, EMU will have to not turn the ball over more than 10 times, and not commit more than 12 fouls as they did playing Valpo.
Ohio plays at a fast pace.
Ohio has four good players in it’s starting line-up.
Sophomore 6’1” PG Marc Sears leads Ohio in scoring averaging 18.5 ppg, including scoring 33 point’s in Ohio’s last outing. He shoots three’s at a whooping 45 percent, but only 30 percent of the field goals he takes are three’s. He averages 5 foul-shots per game., the only weakness in his game is turnovers..
Xavier transfer F 6’8” Jason Carter averages 13.6 ppg. He’s shoots two’s at 49 percent, and converts three’s at only 21 percent.
6’8” F Ben Vander Plas is an overall outstanding offensive player. He’s averages 12.4 ppg, shoot’s two’s at 53 percent, and three pointers at 38 percent). He shoots more three’s than he does two’s.
6’1” SG Miles Brown averages 8.6 ppg and shoots two’s at 60 percent and three’s at 36 percent.6’5”
Starter 6’5” F Ben Roderick averages 7.6 ppg. He shoots both two’s and three’s poorly.
Ohio has three players who come off the bench. One is 6’7” F Clayton, who shoots mostly three’s and converts them at 48 percent. Also, 6’8” F Towns, who shoots three’s at 37.5 percent. and 5’11” PG Schmock convert’s two’s at only 30 percent, but mostly shoots three’s and converts them at 34.5 percent.
EMU needs to disrupt Ohio’s offense shortly after Sears crosses mid-court, by making him give up the ball, and then deny Sears from getting the ball back. Easier said then done.
It’s still not known whether both McBride and Golson will be able to return to play against Ohio.
