Seriously, is there a rule on playing in more than one bowl in a season?
I just read that Northern Illinois is trying to play in the Gator Bowl now so this is turning into a weird scramble to fill this vacated spot...

Gator Bowl -> at the home of Jacksonville Jaguars -> owned by Illinois alumnus -> Illinois coach "waiting by phone" to fill

Looking like Rutgers. They are 5-7 playing in a New Years Eve bowl game, against Wake coming off of probably their best season of all time...

For the record, I don’t think we will get the invite to fill the spot.

But if we do, I’ll be ecstatic for two reasons, and in the following order:

1: historic opportunity for us as a school to play in a bowl game of this caliber and possibly bring home the biggest bowl win in the history of the conference.

2: to watch the heads explode of the two most envious fan bases on this conference.

There is probably a less than 5% chance this happens. But holy crap, please let the odds be in Coastal’s favor….

That would be ironic. A few old-timers on here probably remember Rutgers being left out of a bowl when they finished 11-0, 45 years ago or so.

Note- I looked it up on Wikipedia and it was exactly 45 years (1976). Don't think I ever knew this second part-

In 1976, Rutgers declined an invitation to play an unranked McNeese State University at the inaugural Independence Bowl, feeling snubbed by more prestigious bowls despite its undefeated 11–0 season.

I'm surprised they turned down the Independence Bowl, although it is quite possible that the costs of going may have been more than the bowl paid back then.

Rutgers turned it down 6 hours ago. They haven’t practiced since Nov 27 and the players have all gone home. Not saying circumstance don’t change, but Wake would walk over them.

Moglia wouldn’t do that. He donates to the program, but he’s a man of principle. He may offer to cover some expenses, but he’s not going to buy our way into a second bowl game. He’s not that kind of guy.

Not sure how any non bowl team could fill this spot. Kids were done end of November, are all probably at home. No way a team can get ready in 9 days when they may have done no training in the past 20+ days.

It's true. If I thought someone else would win, I'd say them. It has nothing to do with how I feel about Coastal. In MY OPINION Coastal would win that particular poll.

We’d absolutely win that poll, no question. “4th best team” my ass. We gave up a 14 point lead to App at their place and lost to Ga State without our starting QB. Oh wow, we’re so terrible. Meanwhile our so-called conference “champs” had the very fortunate scheduling of not having to play us. Funny how they complain about Gill cancelling the 2020 CCG even though we beat them in the regular season, yet they have no problem accepting the trophy in 2021 even though they managed to avoid one of the two teams with a pulse in the East.
