Who are the Flames Rivals?
Hey Liberty Fans,

With the help of message board members beginning in 2014, we—the students and professors of the Know Rivalry Project—began answering this question and others related to rivalry in college football. We are now expanding our research to include college hoops. Please help us update our results to include the Liberty Flames by taking 9 minutes to complete our latest survey:

Football: https://umassamherst.co1.qualtrics.com/j...1&mbsrc=mb
MBB and WBB: https://umassamherst.co1.qualtrics.com/j...bsrc=krdir

Our previous results have been included in several sports media outlets, as well as the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. You can view past results, links to media coverage, and learn more about us at KnowRivalry.com. We only ask that you wait until you completed the survey via the link above... we don't want to influence your opinions provided in the survey.

We use the Qualtrics online survey software for data collection. This academic research is approved by two US universities' Institutional Review Boards (IRB) and it poses no risks to participants. You'll find further information on the disclosure agreement that is required to start the survey. Thank you for helping us to include the Liberty Flames by participating and please feel free to share this with any other fans that may be interested.

Water has nothing on this guy. He's always making it rain everytime we fan the flames. Heat miser on the other hand is a guy I can get behind. .

Great answer! But we can't forget about dirt either, also known as ODU. Just kidding Monarchs! You haven't been able to put out the Flames.

I don't know that we have a rival but I'll try to give my top five:

1. Virginia - They took McKay from us and ruined a good thing we had going. We may not play them often but they are one of two P5's in the state and nearby.
2. Virginia Tech - A close second. We beat them in a big way in 2020 which may have moved the needle for them, even just a little. Also nearby and a P5.
3. Notre Dame - This is completely one-sided on our part but they are who we aspire to be and have arguably the best college football history.
4. Old Dominion - Another in-state program, but one that has actually played us regularly which we have won. We look to continue playing them regularly in the future.
5. New Mexico State - We played them four times in two years to start our FBS journey and are now conference mates who will play annually for now.

Honorable mention goes to UMass who we've played annually since joining FBS and had a thrilling (though disappointing) first game.

RE: Who are the Flames Rivals?
The potential for the best rival is JMU. ODU has not be able to duplicate it's FCS success in FBS. JMU has excelled in FCS and their on again off again and finally SBC invite makes them an equal in potential for best rivalry. LU has the upper hand against LU in FCS and LU has excelled in FBS to most everyone's surprise. LU did knock out of a FCS playoff game. That is what creates a rivalry. When one team beats another in meaningful circumstances. JMU would bring more fans than any other team and more LU fans would go to JMU. With opposing fans in the stands that creates more energy. ODU has not been formidable against LU in FBS. Until that happens, ODU is just another lower level FBS team.

RE: Who are the Flames Rivals?
I suppose if I had to pick from our C-USA brethren I’d have to say…..
1) New Mexico St. - We’ve already established a relationship with them.
2) WKU - They will most likely be the best team consistently along with us.
