And they don't get buried behind all the other rivalry games going on all week. Staggering the rivalry games throughout the year can put a spotlight on each one.

I've been a proponent of rivalry week at the end of the season but the more I think about it, maybe we'd be better suited to play rivals mid-season when the going's still good and we're not having to compete against the Iron Bowl, World's Largest Cocktail Party, Bedlam, Red River Rivalry, etc.

Just carve out a "Mid-Season Madness" and have it to ourselves.

I don't know about the west but as far as the east goes, seems like a couple different ways you could approach it. JMU/ODU and App/GS seem to be the most intense rivalries but there probably isn't much between the other three is there? So that'd get two really great rivalry games, but if you shuffle it around a little you could probably get three good ones instead of two great ones. Something like GS/GSU and then some combination of the other five. JMU has lots of hatred with App and especially ODU, some with Coastal, and I'm sure it'll get there with Marshall. Is there much of anything there between ODU and Marshall from their time in CUSA? Maybe JMU/App and ODU/Marshall or JMU/ODU and App/Coastal.

Also could rotate the matchups for the "rivalry week" each year so that one team isn't consistently left out. Actually I guess you'd have to if everyone is playing a conference game instead of a bye or OOC, not like you could always leave out Coastal and Texas State when they aren't gonna be playing every year. Would be convenient if someone in each division had an OOC rival they play every year similar to Florida/Florida State, but there aren't any of those here are there?

Actually there is, believe it or not. You could do:

Marshall vs Ohio (very old rivalry, and the Marshall's most played MAC opponent
Southern Miss vs Louisiana Tech (another old rivalry)

It's kind of a combination of all three. Very few SBC rivalry games are played on Thanksgiving. And they are staggered so one week you see some SBC rivalries, and then a few weeks later, you see the rest.

I'm thinking along the lines of two weeks. Play your second biggest rival in October and play your biggest rival first week in November.

More accurately, you got our coach to realize (as we had years earlier) that he sucked donkey balls and to resign in shame after asking to be fired.

Based on the sentiments on here, it sounds like scattering the rivalry games throughout the season is the way to go.

Another good sign for the SBC is it sounds like schools are starting to see multiple SBC schools as rivals. It’s always good for the turnstiles when there’s more than one game on the schedule that gets your blood boiling. I think this divisional line up is set up perfectly to foster that.

Yeah, don't do like the other conferences and tell schools/fans who are rivals and who arent.

RE: What’s the ideal Rivalry Week in the new SBC?
As much as I’d love to see USM vs. Marshall every year, I don’t want any permanent cross-division football games because of what it does to the rotation. Players should get the chance to line up against every other team in the conference at least once during their careers, and fans deserve the opportunity to see those games.

Getting Marshall at home every other year isn’t worth getting App at home only once every 12 years or however the math works out.

You mean like Marshall UTEP, if it be this year or next year Marshall most likely leaves CUSA playing UTEP in football the last time in 2010. That is:

4068 Days
11 years, 1 month, 19 days
133 month, 19 days

Exactly, though as discussed before, what was already a bad setup was exacerbated by UAB rebooting.

I don’t care when we play App as long as we continue to play them each year. Maybe the conference could benefit by having the rivalry games spread out throughout the season. This could possibly be a “premier” game each week with national coverage.

I think Marshall just found their rival this past week during their bowl game.

Cheap shot and their coaches celebrated it with their players. It is too bad Marshall lost that game.

There were cheap shots by both teams. Louisiana on a punt, which was horrible. Marshall had a player kick Trahan in the back of the head after the INT and Trahan was on the ground.

This is such a forced "rivalry" by the conference.

For the past 15 years, Cajuns football fans (and coaches) have circled the inner-division game vs. Arkansas State as the key, heated rivalry game we needed to win.

Give ULM to Texas State for a LA vs. TX rivalry week game, and have Louisiana vs. Arkansas State be the matchup for those two programs on that weekend.

Had LA Tech been invited and joined the conference, then I'd say that matchup would work for the Cajuns, but it didn't happen.

RE: What’s the ideal Rivalry Week in the new SBC?
Best part of this thread is there really is no wrong answer. Our older alums (including myself here) really have as much heat with App and maybe even Coastal (mascot fight!) as we do with ODU. But the ODU thing is going to grow fast and include all-sports. I have very high hopes for the Marshall series (I think both fanbases are still not quite grasping the just-over-4-hrs trip here).

But assuming ODU is JMU's "rival" from Day 1, and assuming real GSU/App will always be each others' true rivals regardless of closer proximity to others, I'd love to see App, Marshall, and JMU play a mini "Blue Ridge Trophy" series - kind of an Appalachian version of the Commander-in-Chief series.
