What's Tater Tot going to do with Rich Rod gone?
Rich Rod =
I think Tech did a good job though.
Rich Rod just doesn't move the needle like it did 10 years ago. He was not highly sought after in this carousel for a reason.
No P5 wanted him.
No G5 wanted him.
If any G5 wanted him, they could've gotten him EASY... especially considering Jacksonville State is giving him a salary of less than $500K.
Rich Rod tends to burn a lot of bridges

I understand why most voted otherwise, but I went for Desormeaux. I'm a big fan of a G5 with a strong vulture whose HC gets hired away promoting from within. This worked very well for BSU several times and USM always refused to do it, which always went poorly for us.

I remember four years ago there was a poll like this. Billy Napier finished last in the poll.

Our hire is basically hiring from within. Remember Sumrall was our Assistant HC under Neal Brown. Who should have been hired when NB left 4 years ago.

I agree, but I think Sumrall having three years at Kentucky under Stoops, and now having real coordinator experience is invaluable. He is in a better position to be head coach for having that experience.

I considered that. It's a good hire, but most of the kids at Troy were recruited after he left, so it's a little different situation.

RE: Who made the best head-coaching hire?
On paper it is Helton. It is not like he failed at USC they just still think they should be Bama. You take out the interim year where Sark was in and out he was 40-21 as official HCand went 5-1 last year. He has also proven he can be an elite recruiter. The other two were just part of good staffs, no way to tell how they will be as a HC.
He did not politic or good ole boy his way to the USC job. Of course, if Sark was ok he probably does not get the USC job and would have gotten a different HC job but it is not like he did not show competence. Outside of one year at Houston, he was promoted at every stop.

I do think it was a good hire and very well may be the best of the bunch but there is just so much unknown about him. He's only been coaching at the college level for 6 years now and only there in Lafayette.

Yes, but there are 18 to 20 guys that were recruited by Neal Brown who are still there, and most of them are the team leaders now... so they remember the culture, and they will help get the younger guys on board.
The fact we had our All-American safety (a Neal Brown recruit) take his name out of the portal after finding out Sumrall was HC says a bunch.
