Alaska issues could be WAC gain?
"The administrator who was supposed to become director of a branch campus of the University of Alaska at Anchorage next week has withdrawn from the job, the Associated Press reported. Jessica Paugh, an assistant dean at Colorado Technical College, told the university's president in an email message late last month that "in light of the unprecedented drastic budget constraints and pending changes to the university, I cannot uproot my life to come to Alaska with a very bleak future ahead."
Administrators and regents at the University of Alaska system have been deciding in recent days how to deal with the 41 percent state funding cut imposed by Governor Mike Dunleavy." - InsideHigherEd.com

Looks bleak for both UAF and UAA will survive these cuts and we could see these 2 schools become 1 school...

Anchorage and Fairbanks would fight with disdain at a full merger with one campus. They will probably split the teams so Anchorage sponsors six sports and Fairbanks gets four or five. Hockey will stay DI but other sports will stay DII. And that would happen with major local financial support.

My sister works for AAU and there is real talk after this upcoming school year AAU will drop hockey.

Expectations are the Anchorage will keep mbb, wbb, and Vb and Fairbanks keeps hockey and skiing. Most of the other individual sports go to Anchorage.

That is if NCAA approves the sports offering split while counting it as 1 entity for athletics....

Man, is this title misleading.

I'm not sure the Alaska state system has any business fielding sports this year under the circumstances. No way the WAC benefits from it.

And how would a school operating at 59% budget justify flying to Chicago, Edinburg, etc? Seems too far away for a school that may not be able to maintain the programs based on lack of funding.

UAA is only spending 2 million dollars less than the average D1 low major and if UAF UAJ and UAA all merge as 1 school with 3 campuses and shifting all athletics minus hockey to UAA they would have a net gain of 4 million dollars for a D1 budget plus only having 1 athletic department it could happen easier than most think. I know that in Alaska they are looking at D1 is the schools merge as 1 university system, staying D2 with both schools sticking around but at scholarship mins, D3, and NAIA, I would think they should look at Canada West as well.

As someone who lives in Anchorage and has spoken with the UAA athletic department on this issue, I can tell you that UAA has no interest in pursuing NCAA D1 athletics at this time. This is with the exception of men's ice hockey and women's gymnastics, which both received enough public support through donations to continue on as NCAA D1 programs.

Barring some influx of funding and institutional support, UAA will be an NCAA D2 program moving forward for the foreseeable future.
