RE: Playoff Expands to 12
Gotcha. I’m pretty sure that unless undefeated, the G5 rep is almost always going to be #12.

RE: Playoff Expands to 12
Since I said I'd do this in another post...:

CFP ranking (how they earned it in parenthesis)

#1 Georgia (SEC Champ)
#2 Michigan (B1G Champ)
#3 TCU (at-large #1)
#4 Ohio State (at-large #2)
#5 Alabama (at-large #3)
#6 Tennessee (at-large #4)
#7 Clemson (ACC Champ)
#8 Utah (Pac12 Champ)
#9 K State (B12 Champ)
#10 USC (at-large #5)
#11 Penn State (at-large #6)
#16 Tulane (AAC Champ)

just missing out: #12 Washington.
Other conference champs ranked: #24 Troy (Sun Belt); #25 UTSA (CUSA)
no ranked teams: Mountain West, MAC

the 2022 college football playoff (following 2024+ rules)

1st Round:

#12 Tulane (11-2) at #5 TCU (12-1)
#11 Penn State (10-2) at #6 Ohio State (11-1)
#10 USC (11-2) at #7 Alabama (10-2)
#9 Kansas State (10-3) at #8 Tennessee (10-2)

Quarterfinals:

#1 Georgia (13-0) vs KState/Tenn winner - @ Sugar Bowl
#2 Michigan (13-0) vs Bama/USC winner - @ Cotton Bowl
#3 Clemson (11-2) vs Ohio St/Penn St winner - @ Orange Bowl
#4 Utah (10-3) vs Tulane/TCU winner - @ Rose Bowl
for the quarterfinals, I just placed the teams at reasonable locations. It's possible that Michigan as the #2 seed gets Rose Bowl instead of Cotton Bowl)

Peach and Fiesta Bowls would serve as semifinal hosts with Peach Bowl presumably hosting Georgia in Atlanta

RE: Playoff Expands to 12
The last several posts seem to have corrected it, but for anyone who's not clear on this... under the new format, beginning in the 2024 season:
  • The Top 4 seeds earn 1st round byes.
  • These four slots can ONLY be filled by teams winning their conference.
  • This means independents (even Notre Dame) cannot be a Top 4 seed unless they join a conference.
  • Teams like TCU will not be able to sneak into the Top 4 if they don't win their conference championship game.
  • Seeds 5-12 play each other in the 1st round at the home stadium of the higher seeded team (or an alternate venue chosen by that team).
  • Seeds 5-12 MUST include at least TWO more conference champions, giving a total of six conference champions a berth in the playoff.
  • These two additional conference champs are not seeded any higher than the other teams in this bracket. The requirement that there be two only comes into play if you get down to the 12th and final slot and you've only seeded one additional champ. The next conference champion would get the 12th slot over any higher ranked teams.

This guarantees at least ONE slot each year for the G5. Furthermore, if a G5 can climb high enough in the rankings (as Cincy did in '21) they can land one of those Top 4 seeds. And if the next highest ranked G5 conference champion is ranked higher than the champion of any other P5 conference -- especially the ACC, PAC, or Big XII -- then the possibility exists for a second G5 to enter the playoff. This also would've happened in '21, with Coastal taking that final slot in the Top 12.

So to wrap up:

G5s are guaranteed at least one seat at the 12-team playoff table, and a Top 4 seed is even possible, however unlikely it may be.

It's realistically possible for a second G5 to steal the 6th guaranteed "conference champ" slot if a P5 conference has a rough year.

It's theoretically possible for three or even more G5 teams to make the playoff under this format. Just understand that "theoretical" isn't synonymous with "realistic".
