Quick synopsis:
  • James Madison is seeking to eliminate one year from the FCS to FBS transition along with Sam Houston and Jacksonville State
  • JMU is being offered eight games (four home / four away) by the Sun Belt for '22 season if they can get assistance from NCAA with this transition which would make them bowl eligible in '23 instead of '24
  • JMU AD indicates that they need to have five FBS home games as part of the transition (did not verify if fellow transitioning schools Sam Houston/Jacksonville St would count)
  • JMU AD felt very confident that they would be in the Sun Belt in July '22 in all sports and mentioned football is basically what would get them over the hump

I know this very heavy on Sun Belt related content but as a Sam Houston fan, we certainly have an interest in what the Dukes are trying to pull off as it has a direct correlation to our program and could certainly tie into what we are doing. It also ties into the matter(s) related to the C-USA programs joining the Sun Belt for which timeline also impacts Sam Houston, particularly if they enter the league this coming summer vs. in '23.

Interesting. We may be playing next year. Thanks for posting.

The ideal situation for Sam Houston is that the school(s) that are leaving to the American are still in the league in '22 and Sam Houston would be able to host a Rice, UTSA and/or North Texas under this scenario.

For Sam Houston, hosting perhaps two of the exiting schools plus a UTEP or La Tech would go a long way to helping bolster attendance, getting people excited about the transition

Hey, I want to commend everyone here for their one-upmanship expertise. If we put all of our "being a d*ck to each other" skills into other aspects of our lives we might all be much better at our jobs, home life and overall people skills. Im not kumbaya'n here. Im not going soft on anyone, its just that sometimes even I get fatigued at being an ***. Anyway, I wish everyone here well. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and finally I wish you all peace, health and prosperity in 2022.

Well Merry Christmas to you too. True, we can all get a bit agitated around here. We really didn't get to enjoy football season as much as we normally would. Realignment is supposed to be an off season sport.

Shared this elsewhere but here is proposed schedules for the three teams as they navigate what a 'year early' could look like. This is based on current schedules, gets each five FBS home games, a sixth home game that is a FCS contest, retains their guarantee game that is presently on the schedule and does the most minimal moving/shuffling to currently scheduled non-league foes.

James Madison 2022 Schedule
Home: FCS (Weber St), FBS (Jacksonville St), 4 Sun Belt teams
Road: FBS (Sam Houston), Guarantee (Louisville), 4 Sun Belt teams
Note: Need to 'buy out' or work out of Weber or Norfolk State games; suggesting Norfolk State (see below)

Sam Houston 2022 Schedule
Home: FCS (Northern Arizona), FBS (James Madison), 4 CUSA teams
Road: FBS (Jacksonville St), Guarantee (Texas A&M), 4 CUSA teams
Note: This sadly ends the BOTPW without a "finale"

Jacksonville State 2022 Schedule
Home: FBS (Sam Houston), FCS (TBA), 4 CUSA teams
Road: FBS (James Madison), Guarantee (Tulsa), 4 CUSA teams
Note: Has Murray State on road on 9/10; perhaps Jax St can 'broker' a deal for Norfolk State to travel to Murray State (same dates)

I know that past JSU contracts have had a clause allowing for the contract to be terminated or renegotiated if JSU moves to FBS. I wonder if this Murray contract has that clause. Perhaps the SHSU and JMU contracts do as well.

At Liberty we have zero interest moving ahead of schedule because we have a great lineup this coming fall including home games with Virginia Tech & BYU. But the quicker the transitions start for everyone the better by the time we arrive.

You're probably right about the Battle of the Piney Woods. Maybe they can schedule SFA as their 2022 FCS game, or maybe 2023. After that, I doubt it happens for awhile

The man who brokered the deal to get BOTPW in NRG Stadium is now on staff at Sam.

Wiyh all due respect, the significance of that game has immediately nosedived with SFA no longer int he same classification. I wonder if the old rivalry with the folks in San Marcos might replace the BOTPW event in Houston. You haven't played them in a decade but it has potential.
