I was thinking about that '06 game today. One of our most gut-wrenching losses. Up 2 scores with just a couple minutes to go. Kept us out of the conference championship game. Earlier in the year we fumbled going into the end zone @UAB and that would have given us the lead with a minute to go. Win either one of those and we're playing for the championship. There are so many moments like that in ECU history but those 2 games in 2006 are both top 10 on ECU's most heartbreaking losses of all time (see link below).

For us it was a magical season, and the ECU comeback win wasn’t even the weirdest win.
(For me, Jarrett Dillard out-jumping double coverage to grab a ball on *another* fourth down is the image burned in my mind)
The most amazing win was the first game of the winning streak. We’re 1-5 and trying to comeback for a win against UAB. Driving late, but UAB intercepts to win the game. Or would have, if the DB had simply taken a knee. Instead, he tries to return it and the ball pops loose. Three plays later Rice completes the comeback and starts on a 6-game winning streak of one-score nailbiters, leading to 7 wins and our first bowl berth in 40 years…

We were so thrilled to make the postseason that no one remembered our one-point loss to Houston in week 1. Had we won that one (in addition to all the crazy games we actually did win) we would have won the West at 6-2 on the tiebreaker over Houston.

And then if y’all had scored late against UAB like we did, that championship game could have been ECU@Rice the rematch!!! ECU also finished strong that year, your only loss in the last 6 was to Rice.

Pencil us in for maybe 2024, let’s see if we can finally play that matchup in the championship game after all!!!
