Grubbs moved up Haygood hasn't done well since leaving EMU he is at Madonna now Keen just went 7-4 at D3 school in his first year and,Meadows is at Troy. The real question is has CC developed an internal coaching candidate to replace him if he left? One who believes in the same values and or culture? If not CC should be doing that. It's calledvsuccession planning.

'79 that is basic logic and was my mantra UNTIL I realized who we are and what we offer our assistant coaches. DeBoer, Bullough and Keen simply cannot afford to hang around when so many more lucrative opportunities exist elsewhere. Creighton, unfortunately is better off grooming his assistants for bigger and better things like DeBoer at Washington and Tom Allen at Indiana, thus establishing a network for future asst candidates. I grit my teeth when I say it, but EMU assistant coaching jobs are entry level for everyone not named Ben Braun.

Think about it, one year ago our Number two coaches in football and MBB were Neathery and Mondro, as both had significant tenure at EMU. Both are nice guys. Is Neathery our next head football coach? Not unless we are extreme bargain shopping. Did Mondro find a comparable assistant coaching opportunity elsewhere? NO, he is assisting the EMU WBB program. Neither of these guys is a Kalen DeBoer.

Unless Ohio permanently hires their interim coach, the last time a MAC football program hired an asst as a head coach was Jason Candle at Toledo. Good results the first two seasons post Campbell, then the most prized job in the MAC has resulted in pretty much .500 results since.

Actually Jerry if CC is here for a couple of years the strongest internal candidate might be Mike Piatowski our QB coach if he doesn't get hired by someone, first. He just needs a few more years of experience.

There isnt anyone on the staff with HC experience - which is a departure from past staffs. Keen and Deboer were both successful head coaches before coming to EMU as coordinators.

And "succession planning" is a management 101 myth for EMU revenue sports.

Our talented assistant coaches get poached so we have to go outside the program to find our next HCs.

So "succession planning" is usually a very sound management practice, even in HM MBB and P5 CFB BUT it doesn't carry forward to G5 programs.

These type of incidents happen too frequently and despite the grief the outrage the tears and the graves nothing changes. Violence is on the rise. Hopefully we find answers.

What are you talking about?

First year coach scheduling tough games that should help next years recruiting class and pocket some money. It’s a shame you’re such a Murphy lover that you can’t be objective in your posts. Do you think scheduling Madonna, Rochester College or Place div 2/3 schools here-tell me smart guy who goes that help?

Feeding Chippewas to Zags, Wildcats, etc. is a little like 21st century version of feeding Christians to the lions (not the toothless Detroit Lions).

Machoistic scheduling does no one any good. It is usually done by low major conferences like MEAC, SWAC, etc. schools which play a ton of road games for bucks.

CMU has ONE win, a one pointer, over Eastern IL.

What's Murphy have to do with CMU MBB scheduling? Nothing.

Barbee is one Luckey (or Luckeyone) genius or a fool. Pin this thought for a few months.

The tough scheduling is good for CMU.

We (me and others) choose to disagree.

Two intelligent posters with differing opinions, not unlike two successful coaches Izzo and Boheim. Izzo usually plays tough opponents pre-season while Syracuse is known for seldom venturing outside the Carrier Dome during such period. Also, Calipari attributed Kentucky's lousy performance last season to his aggressive early schedule because his "team did not learn to win". There simply is no empirical test to validate any of their opinions or you guys for that matter. I, however, think both of you have logical positions.

What I do know is that Gonzaga had not seen anything like Baylor athletes before being boat-raced by them in the NCAA title game. Their conference not only was weak but their quality OOC victories were against Iowa and Virginia, two good teams, that play a skill structured and slower game, nothing like what Baylor presented. The Zags had been batting against curve ball and off-speed pitchers, then got to face a flamethrower, thus the results.

My opinion: Playing Top Ten teams gets you a paycheck and some National TV exposure but getting pummeled by superior athletes not seen in the MAC has questionable benefits for your league performance. That said, playing Goshen, Sienna Hts, U-M Dearborn and Concordia as we did in 2019-20 season was simply a thinly veiled effort to get someone to a 20 win contract extension. We learned ABSOLUTELY ZERO from those contests!

I like Heath's approach, no more glorified HS programs on the schedule, a couple B1G teams and the remainder of our opponents playing at a level that we do.

As always very well stated, Jerry.

Someone going to complain that CC will get 10K bonus because he beat St. Francis as the elusive 7th win?

Small change. Probably what Tucker spends detailing his new Rolls Royce.

You betcha '79. It's a performance bonus, not unlike those paid to business unit managers in the corporate world and hardly financially excessive. Now if it triggers another contract year then...
