Hope we move there sooner rather than later, so that the current charade of "amateur sports" can finally end

What happens to the oh-so-important TV money when teams get dropped to a lower level? Is that the carrot-on-a-stick that leads to greater effort, or to greater cheating?

Agree!
I'd be thrilled with the previously outlined tier set-up if we could ever put together the mythical Magnolia League.

That's how it works in UK/Europe. The higher leagues get the TV money, so the clubs have a business decision--do they invest more to try for a bump up to get more income?

Except the NFL franchises (and presumably NBA and MLB and NHL) would probably not be subject to relegation. Too much money at stake there.

This

Let them either pay their own way for school or just be an employee. End the 'facade' for a lot of them. It's a waste of regulation time and spots for kids who don't get accepted because of someone who isn't really there to be a student

It would really put a hole into some schools... in that if they can't make 50k+ from their image or from the team that 'hires' them, the value of a Rice scholarship suddenly looks preferable relative to say a UH education (in terms of cost).

While there is almost certainly a more formal split coming between the haves and have-nots, I don't believe there is a chance in hell that it will include relegation. That is a favorite messageboard comment when the topic turns to realignment. But none of the money schools today would ever agree to it- and there is no central organizing body to propose it or put it in place. Yeah its fun with the Premier leage, but 0% chance it comes to college football

The only way I see pro/rel actually coming to America is if some future federal law requires it (thus the central authority to impose it which the NCAA lacks), and I agree that there's zero chance of that ever happening. There's no way the beneficiaries of the status quo, who carry most of the value, would ever agree to that risk. I mean, with 12 SEC states sure to have two senators each vote "no", you're already stuck at finding 60 (or if we throw out the filibuster, 50) votes from the remaining 76. Add in the ACC and Big Ten, and that's another 26 senators that are at best borderline "yes" votes (and most are surely firm no's). The P5 has legislative coverage as good as the military industrial complex.

And this discussion at the same time that the "haves" of Europe's soccer haves are floating their own breakaway international league that they could never be relegated from. As much as I dislike it, we're more likely to see the American pro sports model exported than the European model imported.

For the intrepid (as well as those seeking definitive confirmation that Bloom will be back)....please to enjoy the latest episode of the Rice Owls Insider with JK and Bloom:

(for the record, I am not one of those intrepid souls and am immensely disappointed at the state of our football program and the decision to keep Bloom)

I listened to part of it. Not really surprised- he has to put a positive spin on things. I get that. But talks alot about "tangible progress" and how hard it is to upgrade talent at a school like Rice. Also about how much injuries impacted the season.

Facts on the ground don't match his rhetoric. Says we are recruiting Texas and Houston "better than we ever have". This is so factually incorrect it's ridiculous.

As someone said in an earlier thread, it borders on gaslighting

LB room looking thin.

Banks played in 1 game last year (the first game at Arkansas). I don't know if he got hurt but he didn't play after that. He played 3 games in 2020 (out of 5) - all on special teams.

I don't want to see guys leave, but let's keep it realistic. Some of these folks leaving are not going to end up at a D1 school. At a minimum, they're not going to be at a FBS school.

Didn’t say he was a great player-just light on bodies at the LB position.

Derek Ferraro is now in the portal.

Wonder where he’ll end up-Maybe Sacred Heart, Fordham, or similar.

That wouldn't reflect too well on our recruiting

Not Rice related (I hope), but Oklahoma has had a bunch of big time players all go into the portal after Lincoln Riley announced he's leaving for USC. If they all end up at USC, this big guy is going to need a strenuous offseason to be ready for our game next September.

Ferraro offered by UConn and Stony Brook.

A bit surprised UConn would offer him so quickly but that team is pretty devoid of talent.
