OT Can UMASS and UCONN survive as FBS Independents?
After this round of realignment there will be 4 Indy's

1) Notre Dame (scheduling alliance with ACC)
2) Army

3) UCONN
4)UMASS

1&2 can easily fill a 12 game schedule but UCONN and UMASS may find it tough to get home-and-home with many FBS teams especially given they are viewed weaker than some FCS teams. Ultimately UCONN and UMASS may have improved their basketball conference but completely sacrificed football, maybe it's time for the two to drop to FCS level.

Define “survive”.

I mean, yeah, if they’re willing to pay an FBS coaching staff and are content to be in the Bottom 10, year-in and year-out, with the occasional 4-8 or 5-7 to mix things up a bit, and maybe a crapola bowl game once every 10 or 12 years, then… sure, why not.

But if they’re not willing/content to do those things, then no they will have to pull the plug on this whole farce by 2030 at the latest, probably sooner than that.

To clarify, the above scenario is just if they are Independent. If they somehow are able to join an FBS conference, that would change the outlook.

I believe only military schools or large religious schools (Notre Dame, BYU, Liberty) that have a national following can survive as Independents.

Survive? Yes.

Thrive? Nope.

UMASS should have been on the phone with WKU and the mac when MTSU decided they didn't want to leave.

They were kicked out of the MAC because they would not join for all sports.

Yes, but, and that is a huge but, they stated very recently they were not leaving the A10 so they will have to remain indy in football because not even the rebuilding CUSA is willing to invite them as a football only.
