Dell McGee. Southern fans would be thrilled.

I believe it will end up being Jon Sumrall and if that's who they are considering make it happen by next week. I guess there are some other good names on there but it seems many fans really want Sumrall.

A lot of people saying anyone would be better than Chip Lindsey. I'm curious though, does the name Ellis Johnson still make Southern Miss fans sick to their stomachs?

Sick? No. It does make me want to punch something and it brings up a bad taste in my mouth. I don’t know that I’ll ever forgive what he and those that chose him did to our program. He killed a part of me. I used to be rabid. Would watch Southern Miss football religiously. Lived and died with every win and loss. After him, my passion died. I became a cynical fan. I expect losses in order to not get let down. I am happy when we win, but losses don’t affect me that much because the part that deeply cared died in 2012. Honestly the move to the Sun Belt shocked me because it felt so un-Southern Miss-like to do something proactive and better themselves. To win in something when it mattered. So may ELLLLLLLLLLLLoss’s grits always be cold, his biscuits never rise, and may he receive unsweet tea every time he asks for sweet.

I feel the same way about CL. I feel bad for whatever team he somehow gets himself on.

We had Elloss first to nearly destroy the program, then after Monken's rebuild, we hired Time-Release Elloss in Hopson. He was nearly as bad as Elloss, he just took longer. Now Will Hall is pulling the ox out of the ditch. It's been a frustrating decade.

When you shed an unpopular coach a new coach search can make a fan feel really good.

or really bad as us ULM fans can attest to. Fortunately we seem to have finally gotten one right.

As for the Troy fans looking at someone with history at Troy; I would just say be very careful with that. Lots of pitfalls in doing that.

Dell can recruit that is for sure and that is 60-70% of the battle in college football. He was also a very good HS coach.

I'd say less than that. Maybe 50%. Many of our recruiting classes the last several years were easily in the top half of the conference yet our results....well, they speak for themselves.

Conf rank does not matter when there is a big spread from top to bottom also ULM has been a bottom half team when it comes to recruiting the last four years.

10/10, 8/10, 10/10 and 5/10.

RE: Chip Lindsey out at Troy
Just want to chime in for a moment and say that not everyone in Troy is break dancing over the idea of Jon Sumrall as HC. Some of us...ahem...would prefer someone with previous HC experience. BUT if he is hired we'll root for him just the same.

However, the Sumrallites, as I've taken to calling them, have made him out to be the messiah of everything football, exactly the same thing the Ansleyians have done for their guy. So no matter which one is hired I'll expect no down time, no time needed to fix the mess or put out the fires, just instant success and nothing but success.

When UL is in the 60's+/- and the 4th on back is all grouped back in the bottom of the G5 90's+ finishing 5th in the conference means nothing. The national ranking is a better indicator. It has only been since 2014+/- that the top of the Belt was significantly higher than the bottom. ULM has not sniffed a top three in the last four years.

Totally agree. This strategy has killed many a program. It has it's fans for nostalgic reasons.

I think people know it'l be someone with previous history simply for the fact that is how Chancellor Hawkins likes to hire people. I just hope if a new coach comes in and after 2 seasons there is no improvement we see them on and try again.

No he should always be named. Let it be known. Why should his name be allowed to escape scorn? Ellis "leave at 5" Johnson. Worse football coach of all time.
