Good move.
I see the SWAC getting a lot better led by Jackson State which is invigorating their conference the way Marshall did to the MAC 25 years ago.
I think HBCU sports will improve as there seems to be more emphasis and I assume more dollars going to them.
E.g., Howard hosted Notre Dame on MLKjr day and will play MSU (Morgan State) in Cleveland as part of NBA all-star weekend.
I grew up in the era where equity was mostly Title IX (females). Now a lot of equity means HBCUs.
NIL rights are going to be a big booster for those programs too.
I think you are right.
There are SO MANY D-I schools (over 350) and they need to differentiate themselves from each other. (Something EMU/CMU/WMU, etc. have trouble doing).
Jackson State is now the darling of HBCU FB. [NDSU has been the darling of FCS FB.]
Howard is considered 'the mecca' for African-American students esp. for certain fields of study esp. related to government, law, arts, etc.
I had a Howard faculty member over for lunch last year and he told me that I believe they had 30,000 applications for freshmen admission (I believe they admit only around 3,000 because a housing shortage on campus). This heightened interest could be because of the fame of Kamala Harris, Chadwick Bosman, etc.
The job of the HBCU will be to distinguish themselves from other HBCUs but I see a rising tide tied to equity funding (e.g., the State of Maryland agreed to pony up a lot of money to public Maryland HBCUs I believe to settle a lawsuit claiming inferior funding compared to other Maryland public universities.
And the philanthropic giving has been amazing led by the ex-wife of Jeff Bezos.
