Thanks for letting us know DP. Great match. Close to home, a program that he can play for and a good school for an MBA degree. Good kid, he made a great decision.

I'm excited for him as for his academic choice.

As I assume everyone knows, WSU's school of business is next to Little Caesars Arena in the heart of the sports and entertainment area.

Being MBA + intercollegiate athletics maybe something opens for him in sports administration.

May open up other opportunities with all kind of companies in the downtown area.

This might be one of those situations, like Howard U. in D.C., where the ACADEMIC and PROFESSIONAL opportunities are the big selling point not making a decision based on athletics AS THE PRIMARY CRITERION.

Wayne State is a neat area. I love hanging downtown and hes going to be in an elite Div II conference. Good for him and good for them.

I have an undergrad from Wayne State so I have a real appreciation of the area along Woodward from 94 to downtown, and esp. Comerica Park, Ford Field, etc. (and now LCA).

Sometimes I wish I could relive the younger part of my life at Wayne State (as it is today) and EMU (as it is today).

When I was at WSU I lived in an apartment building which mercifully was torn down and became a parking lot before becoming a WSU building.

Good move.

I see the SWAC getting a lot better led by Jackson State which is invigorating their conference the way Marshall did to the MAC 25 years ago.

I think HBCU sports will improve as there seems to be more emphasis and I assume more dollars going to them.

E.g., Howard hosted Notre Dame on MLKjr day and will play MSU (Morgan State) in Cleveland as part of NBA all-star weekend.

I grew up in the era where equity was mostly Title IX (females). Now a lot of equity means HBCUs.

I think you are right.

There are SO MANY D-I schools (over 350) and they need to differentiate themselves from each other. (Something EMU/CMU/WMU, etc. have trouble doing).

Jackson State is now the darling of HBCU FB. [NDSU has been the darling of FCS FB.]

Howard is considered 'the mecca' for African-American students esp. for certain fields of study esp. related to government, law, arts, etc.

I had a Howard faculty member over for lunch last year and he told me that I believe they had 30,000 applications for freshmen admission (I believe they admit only around 3,000 because a housing shortage on campus). This heightened interest could be because of the fame of Kamala Harris, Chadwick Bosman, etc.

The job of the HBCU will be to distinguish themselves from other HBCUs but I see a rising tide tied to equity funding (e.g., the State of Maryland agreed to pony up a lot of money to public Maryland HBCUs I believe to settle a lawsuit claiming inferior funding compared to other Maryland public universities.

And the philanthropic giving has been amazing led by the ex-wife of Jeff Bezos.

Last year Howard had a 5 star hoops recruit, but covid messed up the season and he went into the draft after. Howard also recruits multi-ethnically. They got a white kid from Texas on the team and signed an Iranian-Canadian kid a couple years ago. On the down side years of limited funding have resulted in a major housing problem on that campus with many students living in dorms that should be condemned and rebuilt. Lots of health issues associated with their student housing. For many black folks an HBCU education can lead to strong connections in their profession, social networks and such. Many HBCUs also have pretty large basketball arenas as well.

I'm very familiar with Howard. In the last say two years have had two Howard professors over for lunch.

Couple of notes:

1). Howard has a very significant International student body. I believe HU is 87% black, much less than other HBCUs. It is multi-cultural.

2). HU has been doing a lot to increase/improve student housing over the years. They got bad press over student protests but I think the big problem NOW is shortage of student housing. Moving off campus and renting in a very expensive city like Washington is not easy. As the freshman class increases it squeezes available rooms for upper classmen wishing to remain on campus.

3). The area where Howard is located (just on the fringe of the Shaw neighborhood) is going through a dramatic renaissance with a lot of new building going on (and have been going on esp. the last half dozen years). Here is the latest as of YESTERDAY (talk about being timely). Note plans to build apartment-style housing two blocks from campus. Proposed 650 units. (see below).

https://dc.urbanturf.com/articles/blog/t...sity/19184

Just a note about HU alums/others: Everyone knows about Kamala Harris, (late) Chadwick Boseman, etc. But add Rep. Elijah Cummings (late). Also (late) Colin Powell was a fmr. board member.

He was the ONLY guy of our transfers out that I thought could indeed "transfer up". I will be SHOCKED if Bryant does much at Cincy, the rest seem to find new destinations in the FCS.

Fricano was adequate and when Chad arrived, I was amazed that Creighton named him the kicker. He choked on some awfully important field goals early in his career but the past two seasons, he has been lights out, bulletproof. The coach saw something! Maryland provides him a bigger stage, I would not be surprised if he gets an NFL tryout.

My guess is that until we know how many scholarship are available we are all speaking without necessary knowledge.

This transfer process will probably continue for months. Remember, a player CAN sign after the signing period ends. It binds the school to the player but not the player to the school. The player can cancel his NLI and sign elsewhere.

So for football, it appears we were hurt by the portal at QB and our field goal kicker positions.

I believe if we had potential to be MAC champs, we would not have key personnel leave the program . Did CMU / NIU have key starters leave their programs?

How many of the EMU players portal or non portal prospered at another FBS not FCS or D2 school they transferred to under Creighton? Yes NIU had a great frosh running back leave and CMU has players as well.

Central lost multiple players to P5

NIU didnt lose as much but they didnt take a lot in : https://247sports.com/Season/2022-Footba...nkey=24073

here is the 247 rankings for the MAC:

Per them - we're in 5th.

Would it kill anyone to do any research before making broad statements like "I believe if we had potential to be MAC champs, we would not have key personnel leave the program . Did CMU / NIU have key starters leave their programs?"

That’s why. I put question mark, Dan? It appears CMU is recruiting well based on several of their players transferring up.
