You are omitting McBride as the second leading scorer with 23. Roughly 3/4 of the available team members are Newcomers given Binelli’s injury. So you would expect 3/4 of the leading scorers to be newcomers. So, I would expect this.

Golson improved from 4-15 shooting to 5-14 shooting. Miggy should be pleased.

And while Nate Scott didn’t score a lot, he was good defensively and clutch as hell in the OT’s. The 4 transfers were stellar tonight. And you can tell that Njie will be better once he gets used to the speed of the game.

The night belonged to Monty Scott. The scoring seemed effortless (except at the line…), and he had some huge steals. He and McBride beat their men so much that it forced ISU to go zone in OT. This has to be the best group of guards we’ve had in years.
Sam, you absolutely nailed it! Scott, McBride, and Farrakhan!

His shot selection was much better today. Some just didn’t go in. You can tell he has the makings of a good shooter. It’ll come eventually. The announcers are right that he’s at his best when he uses his body around the basket, and it helped that ISU is undersized. He should do well against teams like this, and he did fine tonight.

Are you talking about the game on the floor? Or the atmosphere of the arena? Or both? The crowd size was a little underwhelming, but they sure were boisterous!! I think there might have been a lot of students there. And of course the game was exciting.

Not pleased. Want to see him shoot well. He’s a very young and inexperienced player.

After beating Washington, NIU traveled to Bloomington to play IU.

They are getting doubled up... (it was 47 - 20) at the half.

Final was Indiana over NIU 85 to 49. It might not be a fair comparison game to EMU- ie, NIU probably had a letdown after there P6 win while Indiana may have been playing more focused given to he scare EMU face to them. But still hard to ignore how much better EMU faired against Indiana than their future MAC competitor.

Also note, WMU was demolished by MSU 90 to 46, for future comparison.

Okay 3/4's of say 60 points? Not 100+.

EMU’s double-overtime victory over Illinois State has vaulted EMU 55 slots in the Massey ratings to now be ranked 193td in the nation. EMU’s offense is ranked 148th.

EMU is ranked 109th in points per game ( 82.5 ppg), 90th in steals per game (9.5 spg), and 15th in most foul shots made per game (22.5 FTM per game).

RE: Illinois State
Great win to start the home out of conference basketball schedule. I was fortunate to be sitting court side for half the game and in the stands behind Monty and Noah’s parents the other half of game.

Very impressed with Monty’s second half aggressiveness offensively and defensively!!

Sitting court side it was so fun watching the intensity of both teams the second half. Both teams were fighting hard for a victory and not backing down. Loved it!!

Admitingly coach Heath in his post game interview mentioned they need to work on 1) Low post scoring (Njie and Axel) and 2) Situational conditions when the game is on the line. I would add a 3rd - we gave up too many offensive rebounds. We must box out on the shot. I would add a 4th) our free throw percentage was disappointing!!

Overall I was very impressed that our young team did not get rattled and handled ISU’s switching back and forth from man to man to zone and full court press!!!

This team is missing Ty Groce but I believe we will be an exciting team and have a decent chance to finish 0.500 or better in MAC play.

I hope Spotts is ok…I couldn’t tell if he pulled a hamstring or groin but we need him defensively!!

Finally that Reeves kid for ISU put on a show - what a player!!

Yes Miggy! As they say you play like you practice. When he made four consecutive shots during Thursday’s practice, I could tell he was going to step it up. Need to find some low post presence :-)

They say Njie has a terrific low-post game. Looked like he was playing on one leg yesterday and was rusty from the lay-off.

RE: Illinois State
EMU players were terrific last night. As we watched the first-half progress, we could see the team learning how to play as a cohesive unit. In the second half and in both overtimes they demonstrated for the first time that they could be efficient scoring the ball, and by doing so, showed they could score 79-points in regulation.

They also grew as a team in areas they had been weak. As they shot more foul-shots (43), forced opponent turnovers (13-steals), and had a number of fast breaks.

EMU committed 15 turnovers, Illinois State 22. Such resulted in EMU outscoring Illinois State 28-10 off of turnovers. The is one indication that most of EMU’s turnovers were of such a nature that it was not easy for Illinois State to turn EMU’s turnovers.into Illinois State points. As, with EMU committing seven fewer turnovers, the scoring margin off turnovers would have been closer.

EMU also outscored Illinois State 13-2 on fast breaks.

EMU’s players still need to vastly improve in certain areas if they are going avoid close games. I will discuss in a future separate post.

One thing about Groce that we are missing:

These young student-athletes are getting a 'world class education' on decision making. No longer do they pick school X and stay there for 4 years.

Now, they have the 'grass is greener' opportunity every year and they need to make wise choices.

And lest I be wrong, they get one free transfer but if they want to transfer again they sit one.

This paradigm is more consistent with where society is today where an employee might not spend 25, 35 or even more years with the same company. Now people switch employers like they switch cars and lovers and live and work longer.
