Well that gives CUSA 8 pending WKU decision. CUSA survives....for now.

What choice does WKU have?

No readily apparent one but who knows maybe UMass would reconsider the MAC, if the MAC is still interested in 14.

Incredible.

What an awful, short-sighted decision, especially if the reason was about short-term exit fees.

Penny wise and pound foolish.

Yeah, especially if WKU is able to leave anyways.

CUSA took the best basketball program in the WAC.

Youre welcome.

But, but, but it was a "no-brainer" and a "done deal" ...

Good move by MTSU (and hopefully WKU stays put, too, however relunctantly).

Y'all won't lose your places at the front of the line to the C-USA escape hatch when the "G-5" sands shift again.

Moving for moving's sake never seldom ends up being the correct decision

They pulled schools your Western Athletic Conference wanted and needed. The Suck Belt and the AAC don't need Sam Houston or New Mexico State. Those leagues are going in a different direction. Conference USA is going in theirs.

Would the MAC look at calling up an FCS school?

Nobody. The MAC said they will not invite WKU now. It is both as a package or no deal.

The Mid-American Conference isn't in a rush to expand. They will always be there.

No reason to think Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky couldn't explore this again if things don't get better for Conference USA after 2023 when the media rights comes up for negotiation.

Excellent decision to focus on opportunity over a myopic focus on stability that results in extreme mediocrity. CUSA will quickly reestablish itself as a good conference and superior to the MAC in both major sports.

DavidSt,

What are your sources saying about Illinois State and Southern Illinois to the MAC?

Would lock down the Bloomington/Peoria and Carbondale/Cairo markets for those who like following "G-5" level programs, right?

Are we sure about that at least with respect to MTSU?

As I noted on another thread, personal relationships matter.

It's not an accident that none of the C-USA schools that had defected the Sun Belt previously (WKU, MTSU and FIU) were invited back.

Now,, MTSU has publicly turned down a presumed invite from the MAC.

So, MTSU has essentially poisoned its relationships with both the Sun Belt and MAC.

If you're the University of Texas, then you can play footsie, make leagues jump through hoops, and then turn them down because you're such a valuable school.

I wouldn't feel comfortable in that position as MTSU at all, though. They better pray that C-USA doesn't have more defections down the road because they're in a position where they've publicly repudiated two other G5 leagues.

and not that attractive to a 3rd G5 league, and too far of a geographical outlier for the 4th one.

If WKU goes, MTSU may not have a slot. UMass or someone else might take it.

The MAC really needed to dictate its terms for taking in MTSU, and apparently they did. Can't help but feel WKU is one of the bigger losers in this round of CR getting stuck in the CUSA rebuild.
