What an awful, short-sighted decision, especially if the reason was about short-term exit fees.
Penny wise and pound foolish.
The Mid-American Conference isn't in a rush to expand. They will always be there.
No reason to think Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky couldn't explore this again if things don't get better for Conference USA after 2023 when the media rights comes up for negotiation.
Are we sure about that at least with respect to MTSU?
As I noted on another thread,
personal relationships matter.
It's not an accident that none of the C-USA schools that had defected the Sun Belt previously (WKU, MTSU and FIU) were invited back.
Now,, MTSU has publicly turned down a presumed invite from the MAC.
So, MTSU has essentially poisoned its relationships with both the Sun Belt and MAC.
If you're the University of Texas, then you can play footsie, make leagues jump through hoops, and then turn them down because you're such a valuable school.
I wouldn't feel comfortable in that position as MTSU at all, though. They better pray that C-USA doesn't have more defections down the road because they're in a position where they've publicly repudiated two other G5 leagues.
