RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
Ball St is Kent. Five solid players with no stars. There losing 73-68 with 1:30 left. The two Buffalo stars Fair and Woolley have 53 of the 73 Buffalo points. When they need a basket they get one. Ball St just had a chance to cut it to 3 and their solid player turned it over trying to make something of nothing. Very familiar.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
WNIT pairings, dates and locations will be announced at 2 p.m. Monday.

All games are at campus sites, and first rounds are scheduled by geography. The closest team to Kent is Youngstown State, which finished at 24-6 and second in Horizon League. Next is Bucknell (23-9), in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and after that is Purdue (16-14).

After that, we're talking 400-mile trips to schools like Drexel, Seton Hall, Virginia Commonwealth, Fordham and Liberty.

Or further. In 2019, Kent State went to 570 miles to Green Bay, where it won its first WNIT game, then lost at Butler in the second round. The Flashes are 1-5 in WNIT play.

Kent State finished the regular season 18-11 but missed the MAC Tournament on tiebreakers.

Four other MAC teams made the WNIT: Toledo, Akron, Ball State and Ohio.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
The women will play at Youngstown State on Wednesday in the first round of the WNIT, time to be announced.

YSU went 24-6 this season and tied for first in the Horizon League.

I'll update as I get more information.

Story is being posted at wbbFlashes.com.

I guess the non-conference season can help sometimes.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
Wednesday's game starts at 5:30 p.m. and will be the first of a doubleheader for YSU. The Penguin men play Morgan State at 8 p.m. in The Basketball Classic, the same tournament the KSU men are playing in.

Tickets are $15 for reserved seats and $10 for general admission. I suspect you'll be able to buy them through KSU, but my experience with three WNIT games says there will be plenty of tickets available at the door. There's a link to info on the Beeghly Center, where YSU plays, in the story on the blog at HTTP://wbbFlashes.com.

The winner of the game will play either Mac regular-season champion Toledo or Houston Baptist, who play in Toledo on Friday. If Toledo wins, the second-round game is likely to be there. The Rockets have a tradition of paying for home games in the WNIT. In 2011, Toledo played at home in every game as it won the tournament.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
Hoping they would get a bid to the WNIT, the Flashes practiced last week as other teams played in the MAC Tournament.

KSU made the tournament and will play at Youngstown State at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Game will be streamed on ESPN3. Information on tickets is on preview story on the blog at http://wbbFlashes.com.

Coach Todd Starkey said, "Depending on which team shows up, I think we have a great opportunity of making a run in the postseason."

The Flashes were wild inconsistent in regular season. Kent State started the season 8-1, including wins over UCLA and Penn State. It then lost six of its first eight conference games, then won six in a row, then went 2-4 after Feb. 19. KSU tied for sixth in MAC but missed the eight-team tournament due to the league's complicated tiebreaker rules.

Flashes trailed 33-30 at halftime but controlled second half, outscoring YSU 38-26 and holding Penguins to 29% shooting.

Lindsey Thall led KSU with 15 points, nine in third quarter and 13 in second half. Katie Shumate had 11 in first half as KSU struggled to stay in game. Freshman guard Jenna Batsch, who had scored only 13 point all season before this game, had 11.

It helped Flashes YSU's Chelsea Olson, the Penguins' second leading scorer and a five-year starter, went down with an injury in second quarter and didn't return. KSU outscored Youngstown 47-30 after Olson left game.

Yeah the injury probably won the game for us. It was a lot of the same old same old last night. Thall and Shumate played well and Blackford, Santoro (who is now playing less than Modkins) and Young not so good. Batsch has being slowly increasing her minutes and looked good last. I’d like to see how we do against Toledo. Traveling to Texas to play Houston Baptist wouldn’t be that interesting. I’m sure the team wouldn’t be into it.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
The women will play at Toledo, the regular-season MAC champions, on Monday in the second round of the WNIT.

Toledo (27-5) beat Houston Baptist, co-champions of the Southland Conference, 61-51 Friday. Houston Baptist's season ends at 16-11.

Kent State's record is 19-11. The Flashes played Toledo only once this season and lost 69-60 in December in the first game of the MAC season. Kent State led 45-43 going into the fourth quarter of that game.

The Flashes then struggled to a 10-10 MAC record, finished in a tie for sixth place and missed the league tournament due to tiebreaker procedures.

Toledo went 19-1 in MAC play but lost to Ball State in the tournament semifinals.

The WNIT usually avoids having two teams in the same conference play early in the WNIT. The only reason I can figure out was that the tournament schedules early games geographically to save on travel. Five MAC teams made the WNIT, so the tournament's options were limited.

Teams can pay (even bid against each other) to host a WNIT game. Toledo has hosted 18 games in a row, including six on its way to winning the tournament in 2011. Overall Toledo is 23-11 in the WNIT; Kent State is 2-5.

Against Houston Baptist, Toledo jumped to a 26-11 first-quarter lead, then didn't do much for the rest of the game. The Rockets shot only 26.1% and 28.6% after the first quarter. Houston Baptist shot 33.3% for the game.

Monday's game will be at 7 p.m. Broadcast information hasn't been posted yet, but I would think the game would be streamed on ESPN3 or ESPN+. Audio will be on the Golden Flashes Radio Network.

A few more details are on the blog at HTTP://wbbFlashes.com.

Losing 79-59 Toledo with a minute to go. Pretty much the same team tonight as it was all season.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
Toledo looked like a team that was 28-4. Kent State looked like a team that was 10-10 in the MAC.

The Rockets shot 55.8% from the field and 53.8% from 3-point range. Both were the highest percentage any team did against KSU this season.

Toledo will play Marquette (23-10) of the Big East in the Sweet 16 round of the WNIT.

Kent State ends its season 19-12, disappointing after the team's 8-1 start that included wins over UCLA and Penn State.

Still, the Flashes have won 19 games in three of coach Todd Starkey's six years here and 20 in a fourth. They were 11-0 in last year's COVID-shortened season and 13-19 in her second year.

Lindsey Thall led KSU with 11 points. Katie Shumate and Nila Blackford each had 10.

More is on the blog at HTTP://wbbFlashes.com, including a look at KSU players who should be back next season and the team's three incoming freshmen One was West Virginia's player of the year and a second is a Pennsylvania all-stater who averaged 25 points a game.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
WNIT ended about like i figured. I'd surmise the team was moderately interested in playing in this thing to begin with and 100% not interested in the WNIT messing up their spring break which starts Friday.

These hoopers started working out at kent back in June and full practice in October and i'd guess had what 5-7 days to be home around xmas. Maybe way less than that with Covid. So unless its the NCAA most teams just want to be done.

Could nice runs in these secondary tourneys lay the groundwork for monster future years. see mens elite 8 run was preceeded by a long run the year before in NIT. But with the portal, there is so much year to year roster turnover im not sure these secondary tourneys offer that much any more.

So enjoy the week away from kent, you ladies earned it.

And i hope one of these recruits can create their own shot and bury 3's as thats what were lacking from our guard play.
