The Post Gazette article that Poster links to is a must read. The Citadel deserves congratulations, but this result is more a commentary on the poor state of the Pittsburgh program in Coach Jeff Capel's 4th year. They only suited up 9 scholarship players for this one. They lost one presumed starter to an ACL tear this past week, and another to an indefinite suspension. There's a reason that Kenpom had them rated #145 preseason - that would get Pitt 4th place in the SoCon, below ETSU! And they have just showed that they shouldn't rate even that high in their current state. The past couple years have also featured season opening losses by Pitt to such basketball titans as Nicholls State and St. Francis PA. If you have the stomach for watching a dispirited team playing bad basketball, you can see this on ESPN+ On Demand.
The Citadel was led by slim 6-5 freshman Jason Roche from Berkeley, CA, who scored 27 points hitting 8 of 14 3's in his very first college game, most of them as wide open as if he had a rack of balls and was just taking practice shots, as the announcers noted at one point. Think somebody on the Panthers might have bothered to defend the kid? Now the poor guy probably thinks that D1 ball is easier than high school games in Berkeley. The Bulldogs hustled and fought, and will be a threat in the SoCon. Especially if you don't defend the 3 better than Pitt did.

The announcer also had a great comment on Hayden Brown's "short shorts over thigh pads" look. When you see a guy dressed like that, you know you're in for a long night. He's there to do a job, doesn't give a damn how he looks, and is going to work you to death.
