Well sports fans, it is almost that time. With JMU opening against Carlow Nov 10th in what will be a guaranteed blowout victory over possibly the worst team in NAIA basketball,
I’ll accept season predictions up until the tip-off of game 2 which is Saturday 4pm vs ODU (still hoping the game time gets moved so JMU fans can attend the football game and watch the basketball game before or after. If you are tempted to pick Carlow to win, DO NOT do that. They are 2-67 over the last 3 years in a bad NAIA conference.
31 games this year and 2 of them are unknown opponents depending on the Naples tournament winners and losers bracket after JMU opens with Kent State. The next 2 opponents will come from this pool…George Washington, Wright State, ETSU, Murray State, Missouri State and Long Beach State.
2 “games” are gimme wins vs Carlow and Eastern Mennonite. The other 29 should be legit competition and I expect to see lots of close, nail-biters all year.
Contest rules
1- select an overall regular season record and a conference record. For example, 31-0 (18-0 in the CAA). The CAA record will be a tie breaker if needed.
2- if COVID rears its ugly head and the team plays less than 31 games, then I’ll use winning percentage as the metric.
Prize
The winner will have bragging rights for a year.
In addition, they will receive a $100 gift card and the world’s most delicious snacks.
Go all-in on this one boys and girls. JMU will not be playing in the CAA tourney and will be losing the autobid opportunity to be the single team from the CAA going to the big dance in March. Hopefully, the team doesn’t mail it in this year and treats every game like a do or die tourney game. Coach will have to dig deep into his motivational bag of tricks especially if the team suffers some tough losses.
I hate the “wait until next year” mantra. There is still a path to the NCAA tournament although that path is certainly very narrow as an at-large bid out of a mid-major conference. It would be great to start the year fast and give the players something to believe in. Uncle Mo is a powerful force.
