Man, I wish I could attend the game. I like our chances to win in JC. It will be a packed house that's for sure.

Is this the first time the Bucs have been 9-1 since '69?

What a game! That 97 yard drive in the 4th was big time. Two 200 yard rushers in the same game, first time in school history.
Coach Bell is gonna have this WCU rolling sooner than later.
Playoff tickets are now available. If you have bought tickets at some point this year, you can reserve playoff tixs.

It’s not certain yet. The bracket will be released next Sunday. With our record, we should have a good chance of hosting. I’m guessing the Athletic Department is gonna to make a strong bid to host. Depending on how next weekend goes, we could possibly have a first round bye.

Appreciate it! Always a fun and raucous game between us in football and basketball

The Bucs were undefeated in '69. One tie. I was at all the home games.
However, this is one of the best teams we've had.
GO Bucs, keep it up !!

I finished in Aug. of 69. I did not get to see any of those games because I was working two states away. However, my old roommate saw every home game.

I was out of state all day yesterday and did not get to watch the game. Extremely excited to see we pulled it out. We have the opportunity at hand to get a national seed and a home game. I think actually we’re going to get a home game no matter what but if we can win against Mercer, it will be a bye. What an exciting time!

So proud of the Bucs! With our 9 wins I think a home game is in the bag. If we can beat Mercer next Saturday then I really agree that we get a bye. What an accomplishment for a team that did not have a clipboard when they started. The region can be very proud. Go Bucs!

RE: Official Game Thread: Western Carolina
*That* was a team. And obviously, as most know......that's the team that proceeded to wreck La. Tech and Bradshaw in the Grantland Rice Bowl. At this point in time, this is the best record of a team since then. The obvious(?) question is..........which team was better? (Like we've mused many a time about the hoops teams.) While this (2021) team **could** win a couple more games, to end 11-2 (let's say, for the sake of this comparison), I give the nod to the '69 team. They were a more complete outfit, with a *much* better pass defense, as well as a pass rush. Duh (witness the Bradshaw game). While it's always difficult to compare teams from different eras, my vote goes with them. They just didn't seem to have any real weakness. IMO..............if one picked up that team and dropped them into 2021...............I'd put them in the I-AA national semifinals right now.
While "things are a little different" these days..............when trying to compare apples to apples as best as can be done.........that team beat FOUR ranked teams, and tied another (Murray St., ranked #7(-ish)(?) I believe). Like this season, many of those games were close - but with the caveat that with less wide-open offenses (in general), that wasn't so much outside the norm. Importantly.............Larry Graham was just a *much* more mature and complete QB than is Riddell (a RS-freshman). And there were elite athletes on both sides of the ball. Not every position, but many of them. And that "tough" should be spelled with a capital "T". On the other hand..........there's no question that '69 team's running game couldn't compare with this current team's almost-without-a-doubt best RB tandem in I-AA.
That La. Tech team was a powerhouse, offensively, putting up some fairly gaudy numbers, especially for that time period. But ETSU sacked him something like 10(?) times (or more?). Well.....enough about all that. But just as a thought experiment............if that '69 team had played WCU yesterday, I'd guess it would have scored maybe only half as many points (or maybe 30 or so, with WCU's porous D) - but allowed likely less half as many. Their secondary ("Buddy's Bandits") and DEs were just that good. It's not an exaggeration to say that the fans truly *wished* for the opponents to put the ball in the air.

Buddy's Bandits were mentioned during the UT vs UGA game yesterday. Buddy I think left ETSU and went to Knoxville and hence had another set of bandits at UT.

Interesting. Someone must have really done their homework. Yes, he went down to work under Bill Battle, and if I recall correctly, they set some sort of SEC record(s?) there, too, for interceptions.

Someone said the UGA quarterback (Bennett) was a grandson?

Beg to argue that 69 team would beat the Bucs today.
Only one position on 69 team, QB, would I agree as being better. But Sanders keeps Riddle on a short leash, often putting him in 3rd and long situations. When Riddell has had to pass, Samford game, he was more than adequate. With Sanders run, run, pass if you have to offense, it's hard to to know what Riddells passing numbers would or could be.
'21 Bucs are far bigger, faster and deeper than 69 team. '21 Bucs also face wide open, spead offenses. Something 69 team never heard of.
'21 Bucs would overpower '69 Bucs.

Agree — been watching this college game a long time. Size coupled with speed is way ahead of 60s college football, and that obviously carries over to the NFL.

@ Buc76 and Buc66 -----------
OF COURSE this 2021 team is bigger and faster. Both size and speed are significantly at higher levels than 1969. But you all both missed an important caveat that I included: "While "things are a little different" these days..............when trying to compare apples to apples as best as can be done.........". I was taking all that into account. Maybe I could have been more clear on my comparison methodology. I meant sorta along the lines we always see of stuff like "in today's dollars", etc. Hopefully you all can now see my point. Another way of saying it would be: that '69 was better IN THAT ERA, IN THAT COMPETITION MILIEU.
Could one *literally* successfully pit that '69 team against this 2021 team? No - or not very likely. But was the '69 team better in that place in time compared to the current team in the current time? Yes. IMO. I'll stand by that opinion.
Finally................don't disagree about Riddell. But he's on a short lease because he needs to be. He's a great talent, and I think even an excellent passer (most of the time). His decision-making skills need some improving.....but that's ok; they will. He's a RS freshman, after all.
