RE: Wednesday
Can someone call James Harrison to come teach this defense how to tackle? Why is he not our linebacker coach?

That's the thing. Dustin is having an off night. The team needs to rally around him instead of Crum carrying everyone.
Is he though? He's been short on 2 deep balls (that both still hit the receivers hands). One we scored later on the drive. The other wouldn't have mattered because there was an ineligible man down field. He has over 300 yards passing and is 26-35. We're down because we fumbled twice and the offense can't afford to not score every time.

I have so little to say, except that may have been the most embarrassing game I have ever seen a Kent State game play. And after 50 years of watching, that is saying a lot. Night.

Dustin was also responsible for our first turnover of the night which completely changed the momentum in the game.

I'm going to emphatically second that. P Haynes teams had zero offense but at least the defense was decent ( I believe that one year the D scored nearly as many YDs as the offense) - not too entertaining and you knew you can't win in the MAC without offense. This team doesn't have the slightest semblance of defense (hasn't for three years - even when we won our bowl game). Akron and Miami have young qbs (capable of 400 yard games) that will torch this secondary. Time to fire the DC - maybe Dean Pees could be talked into a low paying job!

It's a different embarrassment. When you are expected to lose every game and you do and have the follies, who cares? When you are expected to be good and shoot yourself in the foot repeatedly, blowing a lead, with a defense that is literally 99% worse than everyone else in the country in several categories, it's sickening.
There truly is no excuse for this defense or for SL to keep the DC. If he isn't fired by Friday, I personally will begin to question the leadership capabilities of the head coach. I am not enough of a football guy to know exactly what the problem is (IE - gaps, coverages, certain personnel at the right times) but what I do know is I wouldn't tolerate it for another second.
I am pleased with the turnaround of this program, but I am just not ready to anoint Coach Lewis because he changed the culture of the program. We saw how far that got Darrell Hazell.

Some level of responsibility yes. It was a mesh point play so the RB doesn't escape blame entirely. I agree that it's more on the QB. Still if we're acting like a bad night is one turnover and two under thrown deep balls that didn't make a difference, our expectations of our QB have really gotten high. The problem is most nights he (and the offense) don't have room to not be perfect.

Totally agree on D. Bottom line : win the last two , we win East and play in MAC championship and get a decent bowl game
Firing DC can wait till season ends.
Let’s see if Lewis still around when the dust settles.

I really don’t know what to say either except that the defense might be the worse I have ever seen. There has to be more talent than what they are showing. Some coaching changes have to be made.

There were some really awful defenses back in the Cordelli and Corrigall years, but I don't feel like going back and comparing. I think it's safe to say that this is the worst defense BY FAR, on a Kent State team that had a good offense and was considered a conference contender. I'm not predicting it, but it wouldn't totally shock me if they were to lose to Akron, something that before the conference season started I would have said was virtually impossible. It's just so disappointing, but it really shouldn't be all that surprising when one looks at the scores from 2019 and 2020, especially the game when Buffalo scored 70 points.

Weren’t the Cribbs teams similar. Score a lot of points but give up 10 more.

It’s on the head coach. Flash fast is great. COULD be his ticket to Purdue or Georgia Tech or Oregon State. But if he doesn’t invest in some semblance of complimentary football then he may as well get in the wishbone and play a little tick tick spotted….

Could be, burden. I'd have to go back and look. But, I don't think there's ever been a year in which Kent State was even close to this year's situation - being first in the conference in scoring in conference play, and also being last in points allowed.

Well, it's Friday, as I predicted above. And Kaufman has been fired.

More and more college coaches are being fired during the season. It used to be that never happened, except for non-coaching reasons such as being arrested or moral turpitude. He had to see that coming, though.

Not sure what it will solve with 2 games left and the early signing period coming up. But they did almost give up 200 points the past 4 weeks alone despite only gave up 108 in the 3 bodybag/payday games. Kaufman and Lewis go back several years so this one had to hurt for him, but something needed to change.
