MAC QB drought? Where have the greats gone?
Cooper Rush’s big performance with the Cowboys reminded me of how deep the conference has been at QB. Until recently that is. Where did the great MAC QBs go? The list of QBs up to about 2017 is quite impressive:

99 Pennington, lester
00 Leftwhich
01 Roethlisberger, Frye
03 Gradkowski, Harris
04 Jacobs
05 Hiller
06 Lefouvre, Nate Davis
07 Sheehan
09 Dysert
10 Harnish, Wenning, Tettleton
12 Lynch, Johnson
14 Woodside, Hare
15 Terrell, Rush

Much of those great careers overlapped so at any given time you had 3 or so great MAC QBs. And I’m sure some of you could drop some more names I’m forgetting. But since Woodside left in 17 it’s been very average: Rourke from Ohio and maybe Jackson from Buffalo. Who’s the best QB today? Eleby? If a guy like Maddie was around would he be the most dangerous QB in the MAC?

Where did great MAC QBs go?

Is it me or did the amount of transfer QBs into the conference delay the growth of younger QBs?

And then the younger QB's transfer out because they get frustrated being blocked by transfers coming in. It's a viscous cycle!

Maybe things are just cyclical with offensive innovations. The RPO comes out and QBs thrive, but eventually defenses catch up and the crazy scoring comes down.

Feel like Eleby is on par if not better than a few people on that list. Tyree Jackson?

Eleby and Jackson fit into that group. But sort of in the middle-ish. They’d be Cooper Rush. And he was maybe the third best QB in his era. Starting in 97 there were a lot of dudes hitting close to 4,000 yards of offense and 38+ tds. A couple close to 5,000 yards. Some years multiple guys over 3,500. Since 2017 it seems it’s about 3,000yards and 27 tds is tops. But I could see Eleby being the next guy who hits those huge numbers.

Neal was solid. But not elite. It’s those elite guys I’m referring to. Guys were putting up monster stats yearly:

‘99 - 3,800yds/35td, 3,900/39td
‘01 - 4,100yds/38td
‘02 - 4,200yds/30td
‘03 - 4,600yds/40td, 3,800yds/30td
‘04 - 4,300yds/45td, 3,700yds/36td
‘07 - 4,800yds/46td, 3,900yds/35td
‘08 - 3,750yds/37td
‘09 - 4,100yds/43td, 4,050yds/31td
‘10 - 3,600yds/36td
‘11 - 4,600yds/39td, 4,100yds/35td, 3,900yds/39td
‘12 - 4,900yds/44td
‘13 - 4,800yds/47td
‘14 - 3,750yds/29td
‘15 - 5,100yds/51td, 3,800yds/28td
‘16 - 4,100yds/45td, 3,800yds/40yd
‘17 - 3,900yds/29td

‘18 - 3,300yds/35td
‘19 - 3,600yds/32td
‘20 - sh!t show year
‘21 - 3,300yds/24td(projected w/ 13 games)

They’re not far off. But where are the super stars? We hardly went more than a year or two before another QB blew up the conference.
