We all know who created this atmosphere of knowledge denial and fear of the truth.
The professor is using a different acronym (MAPs) to describe people who have not yet abused a child but are attracted to them.
On one hand, pedophiles are the lowest of the low and their abuses reek havoc on the victims for the rest of their life and there should be a stigma related to those thoughts regardless if they've acted on them or not.
However, I can also see the logic being used. Their hypothesis is that people who are ashamed of who they are and those thoughts won't seek treatment before acting of those urges out of fear of being ostracized. And if they don't get treatment, one would assume they're more likely to actually act on those urges. And that is something we all want to avoid.
It's a very sticky situation with a ton to unwrap. I don't envy the position this controversial subject has put our leadership in. If it was me, I'd work on getting Allyn Walker a position at a think tank and disassociate the university ASAP from their research.
I get what you' re saying and agree for the most part. What bothers me is the defac to censorship of a very serious topic of research simply because some students are scarred. This is a textbook example of ignorance fueling irrational fears.
I wonder if those opposed to truth and knowledge are crying wolf about not feeling safe in an attempt to muzzle research?
I've got no time to entertain this mentally ill person and their research of other mentally ill people.
Calling people "Minor Attracted Persons" instead of "Pedo's" because its less stigmatizing? All it does is slowly peel back what is accepted and deemed normal.
Why would anyone want to destigmatize a pedo and everything they are? There's no reason. Whether they act or not, I dont want some creepy as woman/dude looking at my child regardless if they put their hands on them or not.
Everyone has their opinions on this but I will never budge. A pedo is a pedo is a pedo. Get this mentally ill pronoun off our campus.
Donations in general will suffer.

The title of his book is "A Long Dark Shadow - Minor Attracted People and Their Pursuit of Dignity". What dignity do they deserve? They are sick. ODU need to get him off campus (and no salary buyout either).
If a professor wrote a book titled about racism called "Racists and their Pursuit of Dignity" how long would he last?
No matter your politics, these people deserved to be outcasts.

Id love to hear more peoples thoughts on this. Its kind of shocking how few of discussions have taken place.
People must be shaking in their boots from the Cancel Culture crowd that they'd rather remain silent.

I don't know a lot of the details on this issue, I think I saw one news report on it. But my understanding is that he is drawing a distinction between pedophiles and MAPs (to use his term) by saying pedophiles have acted on their desires while MAPs have not. It's not a crime to have thoughts and desires. We all have them, and some of them may be illegal. It reminds me of the movie 1984 or Minority Report where they had thought police. I don't think we should go there. But since we are not there, you will probably never know if anyone is a MAP until they act on it. Which is why I'm not understanding the issue of why there is prejudice. Even if they are seeking treatment, it should be confidential.

I’m not aware that the professor is facing criminal charges. That would be a clear case of prosecutorial misconduct.
But I (as a taxpayer) do think that ODU has a right, and in fact a duty, to speak out regarding repugnant positions being promoted by its staff. We would not stay quiet if ODU was standing behind racist or anti-Semitic viewpoints, even if the speakers do not act on their comments. Nor do we put up with irresponsible comments that foment civil disruption - - it is exactly why Donald Trump was properly condemned for his extremely reckless comments leading up to and on January 6, even though he managed to utter the obligatory “peacefully” at the end of his tirade.
The ODU community should not be expected to stay quiet regarding positions that downplay or whitewash pedophilia. It is wrong, and the school and community is allowed to say so.

He gone.
Quote:Old Dominion University assistant professor Allyn Walker will step down from the university when their contract expires next year, the school announced Wednesday.
Walker was put on administrative leave Nov. 16 after an interview on their research into nonoffending pedophiles garnered national attention.

The assistant professor of sociology and criminal justice will remain on leave until May 2022, when their contract expires.
“We have concluded that this outcome is the best way to move forward,” said ODU President Brian Hemphill in a statement. “We hope today’s action helps bring closure for our Monarch family. As we move forward, I encourage all members of the Monarch family to continue our efforts toward healing and civil discourse.”

"their" contract? Who is "their"? "Their" is a plural pronoun. I guess they don't teach grammar anymore.

AP updated their guidelines for the singular they/their years ago. And this case, with a transitioning individual, it fits their guidelines.

One would think of expressive clarity as being an important virtue for the AP.
Sadly, one would be mistaken.

I couldn't care less what they think. But, they were also the school with a male homecoming queen, more than 10 years ago.
