So We're In the Fun Belt
There are so many different reactions to this move.

Part of me wanted to go to the AAC to be re-united with old rivals.

Then I look at this move and our cost savings and now I'm thinking this could be a good move.

Forget about the money we'll make from being in the SBC, the savings in travel will be huge.

We can still schedule the OOC money games.

And then there's the people we'll be playing.

I think there's some potential in this conference vs CUSA. I also think that McClain wouldn't had been working on this if he didn't know there was potential.

I didn't really want in the AAC (this time) because the teams that gave it it's clout (and our old rivals) are leaving. Memphis will be next and probably USF or SMU. Then who are they left with? Tulane and ECU? i'd love to be in a conference again with ECU, but not that bad.
Then, as you pointed out, there's the geography. The AAC is bad in that dept.

Who really gives a crap what conference USM is in at this point the football team is a dumpster fire as usual. It doesn't matter because every conference not named SEC is irrelevant going forward. MAC, SUNBELT, CUSA, AAC, Mountain west etc are all the same crap conferences. At this point you can add Big 12 to that and possibly the Pac 12.
