SBC History
Arkstfan help me out with history please.

Isn't the Sun Belt just the American South with the Sun Belt brand?

I remember 4 of 7 American South Conference schools making post season in hoops, back when it was only NCAA x 64 and NIT x 32.

New Orleans and LTU were part of that group in the late 80s - that was one hell of a basketball league.

Also Texas Pan-American was in that group of 7 I think - one time one of their players pissed off our formerly large fan base and he got booed every time he touched the ball the rest of the game. Our fan base could be spunky. Good times!

How/why did we become the Sun Belt? Merger?

The Jags have always been here.
I remember the crazy old days and want to go back there but bring football with us.

RE: SBC History
Sun Belt was down to USA, WKU, Jacksonville, and UALR was on the way in.
ASC had put two of 7 in the NCAA tournament and 2 in the NIT.

NCAA President contacted Craig Thompson and said if the American South would take all of the schools from Sun Belt, the NCAA would let ASC keep it’s units and the Sun Belt’s units.

Presidents agreed and after some debate elected to discard the ASC name.

Random piece of info I have no idea why I know - App State and ODU are division rivals in the East Coast College Hockey Assoc Atlantic Division South for club ice hockey, along with Richmond and ECU. Coastal is also a member of the conference but in a different division.
