SBC - New Divisions
Please god Keith, stick to east-west. People made fun of B1G for having stupid division names. People make fun of the ACC for having stupid division names. People will make fun of us for having stupid division names.[Image: giphy.gif]

Atlantic and Gulf. All but on of the East schools are in states that are on the Atlantic seaboard and all of the West but one is borders the Gulf of Mexico. No way we keep the generic East - West.

Atlantic and Gulf are very descriptive and people could guess which schools are in what division based on the names alone.

I'm against "Gulf", especially with Troy likely to be on the western side. There's already a Gulf South Conference for DII. Troy was part of it back in the day. Having "Gulf Division" or "Gulf" thrown around on tv is going to be too easily confused with Gulf South. That's the last thing we need.

Only people that have heard of the Gulf South conference are fans of schools that play there or former members. I vaguely recall hearing about it. Most college football fans wouldn’t make the connection.

I am warming up to it...The ACC has the Atlantic division...so there's that.

Instead of Atlantic, it could be Colonial. Colonial even works for Marshall since the state used to be a part of VA.

I'd go with the Crocodilian (West) and Black Bear (East) divisions though. Each division can have a badass logo of the animal within the sun.
No crocs in the western hemisphere.

Well.... none in the Sun Belt footprint. There are crocs native to Florida and coastal areas on the Atlantic side of Mexico, Central America and South America.

I have the same fear, although the MWC seems to have gotten away with Mountain and West or whatever they are exactly.

Now, obviously, if Shake and Bake are a possibility, we go with those no matter what.

SBC - New Divisions
East and west denotes exactly how they’re split. East half. West half. If we go with something dumb like the ACC did with Atlantic and coastal when both stretch up and down the Atlantic coast people are going to be confused. Colonial will be confused with the CAA. Dixie will spawn racial connotations. Crocodiles and bears…come on. Do the right thing…east and west. It’s not that hard.

Personally, I think it’s the smart and political thing for Marshall to let our new President announce his/her support for a new direction in athletics. The BOG would be dumb not to do this. On the other hand, if we were staying in CUSA, it would make more sense to take that (likely wildly unpopular) decision off his plate. So I’d ignore the posters who claim otherwise!

So….very happy that, by the end of the week, we’ll be safely in the Sun Belt fold.
Welcome aboard. Looking forward to getting to know all the ‘newbies’ too. We are all in for something really special.

It's going to be fun starting 2023 that's for sure.

One thing certain about change, it always changes…

GS was running over teams couple years ago, not so now..
UL was loosing in epic fashion, now winning all different ways.
ULM didn’t know what a W was, now 3-3.
Ark St. on paper was a blowout to UL not 28-27

The tides will change in this conference, that’s what makes it what it now is and fun to watch. Going forward, not sure if any team can feel safe going into a game. Kind of like the SEC.

Maybe we can just have SBC East be SBC Best, and SBC West be SBC Worst? 05-stirthepot
I’m fine with that as long as that road to the CCG continues to runs through Louisiana! 05-stirthepot

That actually exacerbates the problem. I don't know jack about the Gulf South other than it exists and it isn't FBS. If you don't know a school or conference well, and you hear "X in the Gulf/Gulf division" it creates confusion, because you know this dinky lower conferenceexists but nothing about it. If we're going to name the divisions, they need to be unique and not DII throwbacks. Just my thoughts on it.

Well Troy did spend some time in the Gulf-South Conference back in the day. The GSC has some decent little D-II football programs. UWF is a national champion out of that conference.

Troy never captured one. Sad but not worried about going back to get one lol. We do have a NAIA and 2 D-II national championships though.

Southern Miss has two “College Division” NCs from 1958 & 1962. I’m not clear on what exactly the “College Division” exactly was, though. It may have just been a distinction made by the polls between bigger & smaller schools.

There was apparently some talk of us playing LSU in the ‘58 Sugar Bowl, but they weren’t having it.

UPDATE: The College Division was an official NCAA subdivision. It was created in the mid-1950s for the purpose splitting up the basketball postseason tournament. Eventually, it was split to create D-2 and D-3.

stAte has a College division NC from 1970 . . . and was runner up to GS in '86 in FCS . . . aka biggest loser.
