C-USA future in doubt
...this quote from the article to me says about all that needs to be known:
"The C-USA television deal with CBS expires after the 2022-23 academic year, and the conference also has separate deals with Stadium and ESPN (mostly streaming on ESPN+)."

If C-USA dissolves, then I guess no one has to pay exit fees, right?

I can tell you right now with certainty that every other FBS conference wants this to die, including the biggest who no way in hell want about 6 more FCS teams to move up just to save 5 CUSA hides.

Unless the MAC invites two schools there will not be enough members to vote to disband the conference. It's that simple.

RE: C-USA future in doubt
I think the only choice for CUSA is to invite UMass, UConn, Liberty, and New Mexico State. If message board rumors are true that Western Kentucky and Middle Tennessee prefer to join the MAC, the conference might as well dissolve. FIU should probably just drop to FCS. I feel terrible for Louisiana Tech and UTEP. The only option for UTEP is to join the WAC in all sports and be independent in football. Louisiana Tech seems to have burned the Sun Belt bridges and has no real options other than being independent in football and finding a conference for everything else.

UAB, Rice, UNCC, UTSA, UNT, FAU is already announced
USM to the Sun Belt likely tomorrow
Marshall likely next week to MAC or Belt
That's 8, a majority right there. I could easily see FIU going to the Belt. I'm sure WKU, La Tech, MTSU and ODU are all looking for a life raft to the MAC or Belt. UTEP is on an island without a good viable option.
How many do we need to decide at one time to disband?

RE: C-USA future in doubt
Problem is, why would they vote to disband when they are owed exit fees from 6 schools. No CUSA? No fees to pay. So I think it lives on Ramen next season then disband for 2023. But CUSA will still be collecting money. If I understand the withdrawal deal, they have 3 more payments due to the conference after 2022/23.

If all but 3 leave, is it even a conference?

USM is done to the Belt; Marshall and ODU (as well as JMU) are finishing up the paperwork to get into the Belt.
WKU and MTSU are rumored to be in talks with joining the MAC.
if all that comes to fruition, then only LaTech, UTEP, and FIU remain... Liberty has been reported they want no part of C-USA.

I keep thinking "I wonder if the NCAA is going to step in here at some point." and that's point #1. 2023 seems to be the optimum year for all the dominoes to actually move, but if CUSA has less than 9 members can it even BE a conf? And if it's not a conference, are reimbursement contracts (exit fees and any changes in the existing media deal) still resolved somehow? Surely that money, meant for CUSA, is not distributed to the current schools themselves (NCAA units are even paid to conferences before being distributed to schools by the conf). And when does it get to the point where hanging around all independent-like is worth whatever the exit pool of money, and the payment schedule, is?
