basketball preseason scrimmage
per a UB board link. this is the preseason scrimmage schedule. the MAC teams that play 1 scrimmage also have a publicized formal exhibition game. Toledo has 2 exhibitions-Hillsdale and at Findlay (UT is one of the rare D1 teams that regularly plays a road exhibition against a lower division NCAA or NAIA team).

MAC
Akron – 10/23 vs. Purdue Fort Wayne; 10/30 at West Virginia (charity scrimmage)
Ball State – 10/29 vs. Wright State
Bowling Green – 10/23 at Northern Kentucky
Buffalo – 10/23 at Colgate
Eastern Michigan – 10/28 at Oakland (COVID-19 relief exhibition)
Kent State – 10/24 vs. Robert Morris; 10/30 at St. Bonaventure
Miami (Ohio) – 10/23 vs. Detroit Mercy in Cleveland
Northern Illinois – 10/23 at Milwaukee
Ohio – 10/30 at Cincinnati
Toledo – None
Western Michigan – 10/30 vs. Davenport University

Understand that programs want to generate excitement playing D2-D3 games for the fans. But these private scrimmages are much more beneficial for coaches and players.

Usually, it's my understand: teams play a 20-minute scrimmage, 1-on-1s vs. zone and a 20-min 1-on-1 vs. man. A 20-min scrimmage 2-on-2s, then a 20-min scrimmage vs. reserves. Last 20-min scrimmage is 1-on-1s no defensive restriction.

Overall that's 5 20-minute sessions on film against like competition vs. 2 20-min halfs against D2-D3s where the top 6-8 players only see limited action.

Just sayin ...

good description of the the scrimmage format and good post in general. i remember the athletes in action and international teams of the old exhibitions. those were mostly older post college players, some of whom had good careers. in toledo's case the idea is to play a really good D2 team in Hillsdale that runs a motion offense and will make the UT defense work and talk and be alert. UT usually plays them in preseason. UT often also plays the road game at Findlay about 50 minutes away because it's a big deal home game for them and the crowd and noise is a good prep for real road games. UT usually opens up on the road and this year will again with Valpo. so, i guess it depends on if you value 80 minutes of real game speed or get more scrimmage time in with better competition. having a home exhibition is also an extra home game of sorts for the fan base.

I think it was by 4 or 5. Really tight, back and forth game in the 2nd half.

For MAC fans, most of the scoring was compliments of three newcomers.

Another newcomer, Gohlson, had 10. Those 3 newcomers combined for 50+ points.

Always nice seeing newcomers with skills. They tend to be inconsistent, but still very nice to see.

Akron vs WVU

WVU dominating Akron early. As expected a physical sloppy game with WVU playing tough handsy defense. I'm a pretty vocal KJ Walton detractor and he's been a mess of turnovers and overdribbling so far. Looks like Akron having difficulty getting into offense or breaking the press.

Akron now down 14. can't get open looks. defense looks ok. not sure who scores for them unless Trimble has an open look or Walton has an easy 1 on 1 matchup in the mid range.

RE: basketball preseason scrimmage
looks like they are deciding between Castenada (USF transfer from Chicago), Clarke (last year's backup) and Tribble (who was backup off guard last year). All look pretty trashy so far. In fact, I'm done half watching. Akron is that bad, at this point. I think WVU has them doubled up and it's not very competitive. Akron has a lot of stocky 6-2 guards that don't shoot well (other than Trimble-don't call me Tribble) and aren't that good off the dribble. They got a 7 foot Senagalese kid Groce is big on, and he moves well around the court but hasn't made any plays. I will admit WVU can make you look bad-they are a good defensive team. I think Akron down 30 now...

Toledo took to the road down I-75 to play Findlay, a D2 power. Nearly took the L but rallied for a 5 point win. Findlay hit 14-30 from 3. Good road game prep for UT. Rockets again focus on attacking the rim and working the mid range, not gonna shoot as many 3s or post up often, but solid group of guards and tweeners. Ryan Rollins gets 28 after hitting for 30 in previous expo. MAC is typically a guard dominated league. So, I put my money on teams with best guards and small forwards. My hunch is that is in order BG, UT, UB, OU, Kent, Miami, WMU this year, but EMU might crash the party a bit and CMU has 2 guard transfers who have had success at low major schools, and might be good in the MAC. Of course UB and OU also have solid frontcourts too which makes them the most well-rounded clubs.

Buffalo was supposed to play D2 Daemen on Thursday night, but unfortunately due to COVID, Daemen, who went to the Elite Eight last year was unable to play. Instead the Bulls faced D3 Medaille and won 105-54...Not much to report from that one.. Williams and Mballa looked good... UB has a bit more depth this year than years past. One of the freshmen big men got on sportcenter for a putback dunk
