RE: ****MARSHALL @ NORTH TEXAS (CBSSN) 6PM Central/7PM EST Friday 10/15****
The real key to G5 football is simple - you have to luck in to a really good QB and play better than average defense.
Some positions are plentiful, RB, WR, LB, DE and safeties are everywhere. Really good Big guys are tough and are what separates P5 from G5 more than anything along with cover corners. If you can recruit a good QB, have at least one good cover corner, grow yourself a couple of good DTs (by recruiting bigger DEs that are a step too slow for P5) and load up on walk on O linemen, hoping to get some late bloomers, you can be successful.

There could be a lot of great candidates available with the money UNT is willing to spend. Tom Herman, Jeff Brohm, Scott Frost, Dino Barbers all could be available after the season.

It seems to me that we saw two coaching approaches to Grant Well’s performance tonight. In the first half he played ball control offense and didn’t seem to force throws. Was that coaching Wells into a place where he needed to be? The announcers seemed to think so, and it did seem that he was taking what UNT was giving him rather than trying to force the action.
In the second half, it seemed that, with the game firmly in control, the coaching staff let Grant be Grant the Gunslinger, and we saw more efforts for him to be the hero, forcing balls that should never have been thrown, and not playing ball control offense to move the sticks. It was a version of “ego ball” that Grant seems to enjoy.
I could be all wet, but I think we saw two coaching approaches to Grant Wells. Only one of them works until Grants learns how to control the game rather than letting his ego get on the way. The lesson?…Cramsey and Huff need to keep control of their talented, but undisciplined, guy.

I doubt Purdue pulls the plug on Brohm. He is under contract through 2025 and makes almost 5 mil per year. That would be a lot of crow to eat.

As a North Texas fan, alumni, and season ticket holder... all I can say is sorry. We are the most pathetic team in FBS football. Honestly think we would lose to UMass right now. Littrell should have been fired when he walked off the field last night.

I watched the first half and part of the second half of the Marshall vs North Texas game.
Marshall is a decent team, but North Texas made Marshall look great. Marshall is better than what some of their fans are saying. As for North Texas, your offseason is going to be very interesting. It looks like Seth Littrell has completely lost the team.

I need to go watch this game. Is ODU's defense better or did Marshall offense **** the bed against us? Looking for some transitive glimpses of improvement to keep up the spirits during a rebuild year.

We were low energy against ODU for whatever reason. The difference is your team is playing hard and UNT is not. If you have a group willing to play hard, that’s something to build on. ODU also has very good size on both lines. Size and effort combined is a good sign.

I think the glass half full fans see that as well. I'm an eternal optimist so I'm seeing steady improvement and the best defense we've ever had. Just super young and need a improvement in qb play to get over the hump.
Thanks for the reply and don't want to detail the thread.
Good W Marshall!

I can't believe a "run of the mill" program ANYWHERE, would pay that kind of money for a football coach. I mean, for that kind of money, you've got to demand a National Championship. A school like Purdue has no business paying that kind of money for a football coach. What a waste of money.

Purdue is extremely fiscally responsible they have not had any academic side subsidy (including zero mandatory student ticket sales or fees) since 2008 and in 2007 it was $7,820, 2006 $8,394, and 2005 $677,093 so extremely low even back then
that is longer than even Texas that had mandatory student ticket sales in 2008 and ended them in 2009
that is a ton of money for him, but he had "tha season" and he is "one of them" and they thought he was gone for sure so they paid him.....but they work within their means and have for a long time

The issue for P5 schools is that they have so much revenue they can’t figure out how to spend it, seriously. They pay him $5MM because it doesn’t matter. What would matter is a school showing a massive profit from the athletic department. Now that NIL is in place it may matter less, but they couldn’t be profitable and not give anything to the players.

but of course they give a ton to the players
even if you want to place the value of an education at zero like so many future broke and non-degreed "playas" want to do there is still the cost or facilities to train them and for them to play in, the cost of trainers, the cost of health care, the cost of coaching, the cost of food and housing, the cost of equipment and uniforms, the cost of travel and people to plan and execute that travel and on and on
none of that is free and all of that is a value to a player that wants t try and move to the next level

Yeah, South Carolina just issued a $22.4 million contract to Dawn Staley, coaching WBB. That's a non-revenue sport. More money than sense...
