Softball is pretty good in SBC. Here is the Softball RPI from 2021:
24 - Louisiana
33 - Texas State
39 - South Alabama
51 - Troy

James Madison was #11.

The ASU softball team is pretty good. They played in the World Series in 2018 (runners up) and 2019. But, this is the club team. Adding NCAA softball is on the to do list, we just don't know when it will happen.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we have a team on the field as early as 2023

That would be awesome. You think they will just start from scratch, or transition the club team over? Logically thinking, it would make sense to transition the club team over, but logic doesn't always apply. I have no idea of what the talent gap is between NCAA DI and club teams, but it just seems it would be easier to start with the base of the club team, then add new signees and possibly transfers and build up from there.

If they want my advice it would be to make the new head coach, the coach of the club team and put the first signing class on the club team and then start varsity play the next year.

My understanding is that it will be a fresh start and the club team will stay in place separately. The biggest hurdle is either a new stadium for softball or a new one for baseball and modifying the baseball stadium, Utilizing the old football operations facility and the indoor will give them a leg up but if we are going to play SBC softball we need a legit stadium. There are rumors out there about a potential coach as well.

Yes, by far our biggest obstacle is the team us automatically getting thrown in to one of the tougher leagues in the country. Getting facilities to at least compete won’t be easy

The good news is North East Arkansas is big time into girls softball. A lot of good talent around here to recruit from. I'd be willing to bet we could sell more tickets to a softball game than baseball.

We were close to ready to launch before Covid hit. The talent level in AR has risen a lot in the last ten years. We have sent players out of State to SEC, ACC, AAC, CUSA, etc. schools frequently. If you can convince half of those kids to stay and attract the rest of the roster from out of State with solid facilities we could at least be middle of the pack in 5-8 years. It's not the same as baseball because you don't have football siphoning off so many potential athletes.

Membership in a good league is equally a hindrance and a positive when starting a program.

I've grown to love the sport after watching the last five years and obviously a lot of others have based on the ratings.

We would sell more tickets to softball. NCAA softball is the professional level to most young kids. Most of the players going out of State that I am familiar with the last few years to play D1 have been from the corridor between North Central across NEA down to east AR. Really good programs in central AR outside of the LR school district as well.
