We know. We have been discussing it in the thread below titled WBB HC Steps Down.

They’ll have to survive and just keep plugging along. Independence in basketball isn’t ideal, but it is far from the impossible task some make it out to be.

You have a lot more games early in the season. When everyone else is in conference play, a few teams will be looking for an opponent in a week they may only have one game. Chicago will be the only independent and can take that game. Look at all the games Carver had. Any coach would rather have a D1 school than a Bible college with 35 students on the schedule. It’s been done before and it will be done again.

After thinking about your comments, I think I agree with you. We are not going to get any attendance to speak of in the short term, at least, so why not get paid for playing in the meantime. With the state of flux which is college athletics today, who knows what will happen? And you are right that once conference play begins, we would have the field all to ourself for any money games that the big leagues might need to fill holes in their schedule.

The SWAC schools reportedly finance their entire athletics programs by having their basketball teams get beat up in non-conference for big paychecks. It isn't fun, but we can do the same thing in the second half of the year.

Recruiting shouldn't be a problem, because no one is going to be able to recruit reliably for a while under the current transfer rules. Upper level D2 talent is probably as good as bottom feeder D1, and there ought to be quite a few pretty good players wanting to move to D1, or D1 players who went into the transfer portal hoping to get picked, but who were left wanting.

My main concern short term is volleyball. They are by far the best team that we have, and we need to put them in a place where they can succeed.

Any odd numbered conferences that might take a volleyball affiliate?

However, looking back, we only played one high-D1 team last season (Iowa State), so it does not appear that we were playing for the money last season.

Most MM schools will have a non-D1 school places in their schedule in Jan to early Feb but I'm not sure MM would be open to host CSU b/c of NET ranking. But I do think if CSU could make a case and agreement to get paydays from Big Ten SEC Pac12 ACC for around 50% of their games then schedule MEAC SWAC Non D1 and the bottom feeding schools in the Northeast. I would make this the model for every sport offering until CSU became a member of a D1 league. I think its doable just not fun for most involved wearing Cougar green.

Sounds workable to me, for the time being.

If you look at Chicago State’s final Great West season in 2012-13, they played 17 non-conference games between 11/10 and 1/3. They didn’t play again until 1/12 and played 13 games from then until 3/9. They played 8 “conference games” and 5 more non-conference games.

They should load up on their D2 games then. Mostly “local” teams and see if they can get 20 D1 games in from November to early January. We will see if it’s “doable”.

I assume we are to the point where it is too late to get a deal for a conference home for next season?

I would assume so. Though it is late, there are no “rumors” going around about them even talking with a conference.

If UCA did return to the Southland and created any movement in the Asun that affected the OVC, perhaps a spot could open up. It’s a lot of moving parts, granted, but the UIW move at this late stage in the game could indicate that there is more shifting to take place in the next year. Too late for this year, but the more movement the better from the Cougars point of view.

To me, the OVC remains the best possible landing spot.

Unfortunately, I haven’t heard anymore. I was reassured the tennis programs would be joining the Horizon League back in May by a pretty reliable source, but have yet to see any announcement. The Board of Trustees has another meeting on Monday.. though looking at the agenda there’s nothing about athletics mentioned in it.

It’s possible they could have an announcement next week, but I sure haven’t heard anything more, even associates, from the conferences they were pretty involved in (Southland, MEAC, OVC).

Interim AD Jessica Poole confirms the tennis programs will compete in the Horizon League.

Thanks much. We may have to work several piecemeal deals in the short term, and that probably is not a bad thing.
