These 5 schools are the only schools in the country who belong on this list...college football. What is this list?

The only schools with winning records against all other schools in their conference. (but that doesn't seem right with App on the list and missing Ohio State??)

That is the correct answer, but being a Miami fan gave you an edge. Without looking it up, I think Michigan has a winning record vs OSU. Incidentally, Central Michigan had a winning record vs Miami, but the last decade Miami has dominated the series and is back on top.

Correct, though the lead of That School Up North has been cut by just over half in the last eight years.

And of course if Toledo could play Miami on a regular basis, they could catch up on the six games they are behind.

That's weird about the CMU/MU series. Looks like Miami has a healthy lead vs everyone in the conference but CMU (& also NIU)

CMU and NIU were not in the league back in the 50's and 60's and early 70's when Miami was dominant. Plus, unlike Akron and UB, they were both good when they entered the league and those were immediately competitive series.

KSU is quickly closing the gap with MU. If we can get a streak going we should catch them by about 2050.

For ages, Bowling Green had the edge on every conference opponent but Miami. Miami beat Bowling Green so often -- even in good years for the Falcons -- that Falcon fans called it the "Miami Whammy" during the 1970s and 1980s. As Bowling Green head coach, Don Nehlen never once beat Miami, and blowing a chance to beat them in 1976 may have cost Nehlen his job.

(Nehlen landed on his feet, obviously.)

I remember that game well. In Old Miami Field we had an old fashioned scoreboard from the 30's. Older fans will remember basketball scoreboards in Old Gyms that were divided into 7 segments which had no numbers on them, so that you always had to make an educated guess as to exactly how many seconds were left. There was a lot of speculation at the time that BG was tricked by the clock and not sure how much time was left, although this article attributes the confusion to not being sure what down it was.

Ironically, when Yager Stadium replaced Old Miami Field, that old scoreboard had a place of honor in the lobby of the College Football Hall of Fame when it was located at Kings Island.

Ax, a goal for both of us might be to just make it to 2050.

The conventional wisdom in Bowling Green is that Nehlen lost track of downs. I think he had help in that regard, although I forget whether it was the down marker being wrong, the scoreboard being wrong, or something else.

The school newspaper hounded Nehlen relentlessly after that game, and it was hard on him. If memory serves, his contract was not renewed. Bo Schembechler took Nehlen in as an assistant for a year at Michigan before he got the head coaching job at West Virginia.

He really was a good head coach. He got some big wins in Bowling Green, beating a ranked Purdue team in 1972 and beating Syracuse twice. He never did bring home a MAC championship, though, and that began to wear on people.

Nehlen had an undefeated regular season at West Virginia ( Major Harris QB) where they played the "national championship" game vs an undefeated Notre Dame team and lost. That was the all time peak for WVU football,
and I saw many of the games that year as my much younger future wife was in the WVU marching band.
