George Jung, the cocaine smuggler who was depicted by Johnny Depp on the movie Blow, attended Southern Miss for a short time on a football scholarship. His matriculation was cut sort when he discovered his talent for moving product. He became associated with Pablo Escobar. He made and lost a fortune in the drug trade. The rest is history. He passed away this past summer.

Vonetta Flowers - In 2002 Winter Olympics, Flowers became the first African American and the first black athlete from any country to win a gold medal at a Winter Olympics. Flowers was a star sprinter and long jumper at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and originally aspired to make the U.S. Summer Olympic Team.

What sport? Switching from sprinter and long jumper to any winter sport is cool, I'm just curious what she switched to.

Yolanda Evette Griffith (born March 1, 1970) is an American professional basketball hall of fame player who played in both the ABL and WNBA. (Wiki)

She was offered a scholarship to play for the women's basketball team at the University of Iowa, but had to cancel it after she gave birth to her daughter, Candace.

Afterward, she attended Palm Beach Junior College in Lake Worth, Florida, where she earned Junior College All-America honors in 1990-91.[2] She later transferred to Florida Atlantic University, which was then a Division II school, where she graduated in 1993, earning Kodak Division II Player of the Year honors. I was thinking about the Charlotte/USM fans talking about the beers their schools brew. What something different that your school does? At MTSU we have a large dairy operation and you can purchase chocolate milk. They show up to our local market and sell it.

Also several noteworthy entertainers attended Middle Tennessee. Country star Chris Young, Lady Antebellum lead singer Hillary Scott and Amy Lee, lead singer for Evanescence.

Well. MT is mostly well known for not being very interesting. But we are located at the exact geographic center of Tennessee. We house the Charlie Daniels Veterans Center and maintain Artifacts from the Possum George Jones as well as all of the historical records of Alum (and former VP Al Gore's late Dad) Senator Albert Gore Sr.

Middle Tennessee alumn, James Buchanan, won the Nobel Prize in Economics as an Austrian School economist. And former MT professor, Mohammed Yunus, also won the Nobel Prize in Peace for his work in micro-finance.

Essentially, our McWilliams College of Business is a Nobel-producing machine. Eyeballing you, Rice.

Just thought of another one for WKU. Mitch McDeere (played by Tom Cruise) in the movie "The Firm" based on the John Grisham novel was a WKU alumni (accounting undergrad alum before going to Harvard Law).

WKU is in the book, but it's sadly not brought up in the movie.

Grisham likes to mention various schools in his books. The Julia Roberts character in The Pelican Brief is a Tulane Law School student I think (?), and I want to say one of his books features a Rice alum (maybe The Runaway Jury - it's been a long time since I've read it and I just don't remember). He's from Mississippi, so I have to think USM would be mentioned in one of his books?

I was looking up the Grisham-Rice connection and I can't find it anywhere online. But I do see that the Landry character in Friday Night Lights ends up going to Rice. Knowing Rice football, he probably blew out his knee early in his Rice career and ends up on a medical hardship scholarship is my guess.
