For those that may not know, the Rio Grande Valley is a major producer of chili peppers. Chilis are a big deal in New Mexico. Restaurant servers will ask "Red or green?" to find out which sauce you want with your meal.

The Chile Pepper Institute at NMSU is the only international, non-profit organization devoted to education and research related to Capsicum, or chile peppers. Established in 1992, the Institute builds on the research of chile peppers since the famous horticulturalist Fabian Garcia (the father of the U.S. chile pepper industry) began standardizing chile pepper varieties in 1888.

Here's some information some may find interesting about the chili industry in New Mexico, since its a very different climate and agricultural region than some people may have been to before.

Pistolp747, that's a nice list btw.

Chile, not chli

I just checked the weather for Las Cruces, and you’re both wrong.

Today the proper spelling is chilly peppers.

Chili today, hot tamale. (old dad joke)

I used to own a company that made chili and marketed it through grocery chains and warehouse clubs. Sold out 15 years ago.

I would say chili is the product, and chiles are the ingredient. JMHO.

In NM, we don't make "chili", the product you are talking about. I call that Texas chili. I enjoy Texas chili, but I don't think anyone puts NM chile into their Texas chili.

In the northeast what we call chiles rellenos are called Chilis Rijenos. Ha, ha. I thought that was funny. Carry on.

RE: Interesting things your school is known for
Unfortunately most of what we're known for today has to do with the dubious former president 01-lauramac2, but there are some cool things we are known for:

Snowflex: a year-round snowboarding, skiing, & tubing center on Candlers Mountain.

Monogram: the giant monogram of the school's logo visible from a good distance away throughout the south-central portion of Lynchburg.

Convocation: Twice a week today (formerly 3x/wk), this stands as the largest non-sports gathering of college students weekly, as they hear from pastors, local leaders, athletes, artists, political leaders, authors, & business leaders, with worship as part of these gatherings.

Community Service: Students are required to give at least twenty hours of community service each semester, & this includes serving in leadership on campus, serving in local charities, & helping serve in local churches. Additionally, a number of student take time during Fall & Spring Breaks to serve throughout the US & even in other countries.

I don’t believe he ever attended, but he’s from unincorporated Walker County.

That said, when I was a student, we had some mutual friends, and I used to run into him reasonably often at bars and parties. Super nice guy- every time I see him play sold out shows at the Houston Rodeo, I’m blown away that I remember seeing him play open mic nights and fraternity parties.

One thing to add- we’re known for our prisons, including the unit where executions happen being adjacent to campus. I don’t know if this is true, but the legend when I was in school was that back when the electric chair was still used, the lights would flicker on campus every time an execution happened.
