I’ve held it all inward, Lord know I’ve tried
It’s an awful awakening in a country boy’s life
To look in the mirror in total surprise
At the hair on my shoulder, and the age in my eyes
— country music song “Amanda” (1973-ish) lyrics by Bob McDill

Got my first guitar
when I was 14
Now I'm pushin' 30
and still wearin' jeans...

Nowadays, basically everyone is “wearing jeans”. So I don’t think people of today really understand how subversive that was, 50 years ago. But the idea of a grown man wearing jeans every day was a definite statement that he was independent, and refused to play his assigned role by mainstream/middle-class society.
If you’ve seen any episodes of “Mad Men”, notice how the adults dress when they’re out in public. Nothing like now.
