Army was a member of CUSA 1.0, not 2.0. They joined in 1998 and played alongside Louisville, Cincinnati, South Florida, and TCU (2001-04), et al.
Teams like UTEP, Rice, Marshall, etc., came in 2005, after Army was gone.
Now with all that said, I agree that the idea of Army joining AAC seems remote to me. They seem to have found a scheduling formula that works for them.

Until schools cancel on them like Tennessee.

Has there been any indication at all that Army is interested in joining?

No. It's pretty much fan/poster theories on message boards and a couple of YouTube channels.

There was a statement years ago that Army would be interested in being in the same conference as Air Force and Navy.
With insiders and reporters saying CSU and AF are interested, there’s an assumption that army may come along.
With the “Alliance” forming, it’s gonna make scheduling harder for everyone, so some feel that independence is gonna lose some of its benefits.
I am jot certain army will come. Lots of reasons for them to do it and many to not… but the call will be made and conversations will be had. They are the most obvious target.

Without reading the whole thread; I’ll throw more against the wall to see if it sticks.
1) Have all AAC teams play 1 cross-division game after the American Championship.
2) Play Army-Navy before December; maybe August.

There is your answer. If Army and Navy each wins their division, then there is no AAC CCG on championship Saturday---instead the annual traditional Army-Navy game becomes the CCG. In those years--I do think the Army-Navy game proceeds should be divided 3 ways with the conference getting a 1/3 cut.
Except that you need your CCG the same weekend as everyone else's so they are in the mix for CFP 6+6 selection.
And ESPN won't give up 12% of AAC viewership to a CBS property.
Why do you have to have your CCG on that date? It works. The TV money can get worked out via some contract clause that would deal with that very rare scenario.

3) No CCG at all
4) [after reading thread] OOC game as long as CBS owns it or it is played in December.

Regardless of Army in the conference, does 6+6 affect the date of the game anyway? It could be the same weekend. If Navy qualifies I could see one of the 4 play-ins repurposed as a 12th vs 13th game whose winner advance only if Army wins. ???

I’ve always thought it would be cool if Army Navy played to start the college football season as the only game on week zero

RE: The Army joining problem...
The best solution is to offer the academies a sweetheart deal and only require them to play 6 conference games. Army/Navy would be OOC. This allows them to schedule nationally while also scheduling a few cupcake games. The benefit to the AAC is that you won't have to play more than 2 option (knees) games a year. Furthermore, you ensure the academies have every chance to get bowl eligible. No divisions and the two highest rated teams in the CFP poll play for the championship and autobid. AAC gets the TV rights to all home academy games and Army/Navy. Everybody wins.

If Hawaii can have the 13th game rule made for them, then I don’t see why there couldn’t be an Army vs Navy exemption that allows it to continue as is, even with them being in the same conference.
I dare any school or conference to openly oppose keeping the two academies from holding that tradition. Go ahead, let them try.
That’s the answer.

Post 31 says the same: It'd be a bigger mess than 2016 could have been. The turn-around time would be tighter (if there even was any) and it could affect multiple bowls. But... what would happen?
Given the play-ins are a week after Army-Navy, it seems pretty obvious that Navy or (to use a P5 example) Stanford are slotted into the #12 spot while the other is put into a particular 'other' bowl. After the game, the committee can announce whether the two teams are switched or not.
No game sites need to be changed. It'd be similar if Army was ranked #10 and had an at-large spot. I think they'd cap either at being a 9-seed, even if they were Top 4 undefeated.
But, what would they do if the play-ins were that same weekend? Would Army and Navy be ineligible for the playoff even if they were Top 12 teams? Maybe. Is this enough of an issue to reconsider the date of the game? Maybe.

agree. Army is not and should not be in any conference.
How is it different than Navy?

Wow------
You mean they would cut their shares from 1/2 to 1/3?
What would be the advantage of that? Army could care less anout what the AAC would get. Even if they are a member. They both make more $$$ in that game than any 4 games of any team in the AAC. There is no way in amillion yrs Army will split that game 3 ways. Navy too, for that matter.
But....this idea is no crazier than any of the others. Army is sooooo not going to be coming to the AAC. This thread is all about fantasy. But really....that's what this thread is all about anyway. A bunch of "What ifs".
Hey....what if ND wants to join the AAC?
Heh.....might as well throw that out there too.
Im suggesting the AAC share in the game proceeds ONLY when the Army-Navy game forces the cancellation of a separate AAC CCG. So---whenever Army vs Navy serves as both the the AAC CCG and the traditional Army-Navy game----the AAC would get a cut of the revenue. Otherwise, the AAC would have no rights to any Army-Navy game revenue. It seems like a perfectly reasonable compromise that all parties would prefer over having the two teams play two weeks in a row.
______________________________________________________________
Well, playing 2 games in a row vs Navy is, to say the least, a KILLER for Army to join---among many other killers.
There is no rational, reasonable way Army can join the AAC unless they change the Army vs Navy game date. Good luck trying to wrestle the only game of the week and a HUGE national audience and following to go along with that. Not to mention the payoff.
Who's arguing to change the date of the Army/Navy game? The AAC championship is the one who's date would change in the rare instance both win their divisions.
