No.

It was always separate. Other schools are in AAU without a medical school. That was simply an excuse for the fact that they failed to keep up with their peers over the last 40 or so years.

That's right.

There are 16 universities in AAU that don't have a medical school, including two of the original members and two of the newer members:

Brandeis
Caltech
Carnegie Mellon
Colorado
Georgia Tech
Indiana
Iowa State
Maryland
MIT
Oregon
Princeton
Purdue
Rice
UC Berkeley
UC Santa Barbara
UC Santa Cruz

And Texas just opened theirs in the last 3-4 years..

That's true, but the lack of no hospital/medical school.at Lincoln has always been a thorn in their side because their research has never been on par with the schools you listed in the eyes of the AAU.

Now, did schools force them.out for other reasons? It's all speculation as far as I've ever uncovered, who knows?

RE: Nebraska's Big 10 transition
Nebraska was going to the Big Ten once the offer was on the table. Too much academic prestige and money to pass up on.

They had applied in 1925 to get into the Big Ten and were denied. Bob Devaney wanted to get the school into the Big Ten in the 1960's.

It didn't matter what the Big XII make up looked like in 2010 (BYU vs. Baylor, etc.). No other combination of schools would have kept the Huskers there.

It didn't matter if 5/6 schools appeared to be headed out the door. That only hastened the process.

It didn't matter that 1 second was put back on the clock in the 2009 Big XII title game or that they had lost their annual game with Oklahoma.

It didn't matter what excuses Nebraska admins made when the move was announced.

It didn't matter that they were taking a smaller share than the rest of the Big Ten schools during a buy-in period.

Nothing mattered because Nebraska was going to the Big Ten once the offer was on the table. Too much academic prestige and money to pass up on.
