Fickell top target for open USC job?
Haven't seen a discussion on this board about this yet. Thoughts?

He without a doubt is on the list. USC is a top level job, would be harder to turn down than Mich St. was. I hope he stays another 2 or 3 years.

USC firing their coach after only 2 games is really a poor decision. They're basically giving up on the season early and they probably won't be able to find a new HC til after the season. Peterson, Meyer, Herman (?), Campbell and Fickell are probably all on their list.

He'll be a top candidate for basically any job. I wouldn't be surprised if the NFL starts calling soon too. I've been wrong before, but I'm not seating this one. He's a Midwest guy, through and through. He's a catholic guy, in a catholic city. You just have to understand who he is, to understand what I'm getting at. I mean, if it were me, I would consider it. I just don't think he will.

It'd be more likely USC hires Franklin, then Fick goes to Penn State.

He makes $3.4M a year, his oldest is on the team, he lives in a mansion, his 6 children are enrolled in excellent Catholic schools and, most importantly, his wife (Amy) is happy in Cincinnati.

This is what Fickell said in an interview about choosing to live in a "Catholic" city:

“I’m not sure it was one of those things where you say, ‘I’ve got to go to a place that has a high Catholic influence or community,' but my family, like I said, is the number one most important thing to me. And for my family to go to a place where they felt like they could thrive and truly set roots and say, 'We can live here for 10, 12, 15 years' or whatever … to be in a community like this where there are a lot of options for schools, youth sports. There were a lot of factors, and obviously faith was a big part of that thought.”

That doesn't exactly describe the SoCal area.

He will leave someday, most likely to O$U or Notre Dame.

I expect him to stay put for a couple more years and take the ND job also. But this situation will encourage the Bearcats to build a football practice facility much sooner.

USC has a type and not everyone fits the mold regardless of how good a coach they are. It’s an issue with their lack of success. IMO.

Would it be harder to turn down for Fickel? I’m not so sure. MSU is where his mentor, Mark D’Antonio coached and was lobbying for him. It also would allow him to remain in the Midwest, which is important to him, his wife, and family.

Sure USC is a blue blood and has some advantages, but it doesn’t seem to me to be a good fit for Fick.

He's going to be in the candidate pool for all the top jobs this year. I assumed a SEC school would pluck him with their massive wallets. LSU could make him the one of the highest paid coaches in college football.

I don't know if the USC and the other PAC teams have the money to compete with SEC teams. That's probably why they are trying to grab someone as early as possible. USC AD Mike Bohn has a good relationship with Fickle, maybe that will be enough.

He’s a homebody. Other than a couple months in an NFL camp 20+ years ago, I don’t think he’s ever lived or worked outside of Ohio. His wife hasn’t. Their families are both here. Other than his oldest son who is a freshman at UC his other 5 kids have 5 years in the Cincinnati catholic school system. He’s not heading cross country.

Penn State would worry me 10x more than USC and even that seems unlikely.

It's my understanding that he was mentioned for various lesser HC jobs while he was still at O$U and didn't want them.

He wanted the UC job because, well, that's what he wanted.

And as I stated which was too much for the rockheads over on the AAC board to grasp, if he just wanted to move up, he'd be at MSU now.

Tom Herman could find redemption at USC perhaps? But I don't know if he'd be interested in it.
