That is so strange. I know so many MAC grads in Michigan and Ohio that have abandoned their alma mater for UM, MSU and OSU. Route for them is one thing. But they don't even cheer for them if they play. "Big picture" to them.

Say that all you want, but I'd bet 90% of sports fans at NIU (students and alumni) would list one of the B1G schools or Notre Dame as their primary team with the Huskies second.

I knew many classmates at NIU who would root for the Huskies in any game unless we were playing Illinois or Iowa or Wisconsin or (fill in the blank) even though they attended NIU.

And I bet its like that at every single MAC school.

I vehemently oppose this statement.

I’m sure it’s true of all the Ohio and Michigan schools in the MAC but not of NIU, regardless of your anecdotal experience.

This is not true of me or anyone who I knew while at NIU. Sure, some of them weren’t the biggest diehard NIU fans either but they didn’t root for any other college teams. It’s fair to say that the Chicagoland sports fan landscape is significantly different from the one in the states of Ohio and Michigan especially as it relates to college sports. Chicagoland and Illinois as a whole are far more pro-sports oriented.

Frankly, I’m sick of fans of the Ohio and Michigan MAC schools projecting their reality onto the NIU fan and alumni base. And it irks me even more when NIU alums do it.

Please, speak only for yourself. Do not speak for me or others.

GO NIU HUSKIES!

Same way for the Florida schools. FSU, UF, and UM are the marquee schools here.

The tough Huskie loss was offset, somewhat, by FSU losing in spectacular style to a FCS school. I was reminding the FSU geeks here that NIU beat an ACC school this year.

There is no more obnoxious fan that a "bandwagon" fan, and the big schools have a lot of them.

I follow and root for UCF because my daughter goes there. (UCF would slaughter FSU this year).

But if NIU played UCF tomorrow, sorry honey, I'm a diehard Huskie and wouldn't root against them for any reason.

I disagree with this as well. I think you have a number of MAC fans that are "Also" fans of OU, ND etc., but the vast majority that are football fans, do not put the local P5 school that they did not attend ahead of their MAC alma mater. I would assume also, as importantly, that their annual donations if any go only to their alma mater and not split with the P5 down the road that ESPN is trying to shill to us all as heaven on earth.

Agreed, I don't see NIU students or alumni caring enough about U of I or Northwestern to be fans of them. U of I is terrible at football and Northwestern has become an average level Big 10 school but they still don't have the pedigree and history of Michigan, OSU, Iowa, Wisconsin, Penn St., etc.

GO NIU HUSKIES!

I'm clearly not a Michigan or Ohio MAC school fan. I did my entire undergraduate at NIU and am speaking from experience.

Its funny, you dismiss my experience as an anecdote yet cite your own anecdotal evidence as proof that I'm full of it.

So yeah...I'm speaking from my own experience. I haven't taken an official poll or anything. And it's obviously not 100% but I can guarantee you I'm the only one from my group of friends who would self-identify as a Huskie fan.

Are other's Husky fans? Sure. But my old roommate is a Badger fan but he also roots for NIU. I had another roommate who is a huge Notre Dame fan...but he also roots for NIU.

Same with another friend of mine. She's certifiable loony about the Irish...and she also roots for NIU.

This is repeated over and over.

But...if you ask me...I root for NIU.

When I tell people that who ask who my favorite football team (probably thinking about NFL) and they think I'm crazy. But I'm serious. My football team is the Huskies.

And I'm a very rare breed...which is why I'm on this board.

PHUCK! Sorry for starting a shyt storm! This weekend, I’m a Huskie fan. When you come to Mt. Pleasant, not so much. When you play WORSTern, I’m a Huskie fan again. It’s always a great game when the Huskies and CHImPS square off. The fans respect one another regardless of the venue.
I value that.

I have cheered for Illinois since I was 11 and went to every home game for 5 years and sat in student section with brother, roommates including 83 season for Rose Bowl. Also went to 2002 Sugar Bowl vs. LSU whom I’ve supported longer due to family friends teaching there, giving us posters, souvenirs, autographs. I did support UI that game. However I take great pride cheering against them vs. NIU and defending NIUs recent success vs their lackof in football . They have despised their school for decades and are the most fair weather fans there are other than my brother.

And I still talk to about 6 college friends that put NIU above all. And I can honestly say from late 80s to early 90s I can’t remember 1 person that would cheer against NIU. Perhaps since whomever they liked didn’t play NIU? Don’t know. But it’s a reach to compare Illinois vs. success of UM, OSU which are supported by generations of fans driven by success on national stage. Doubt there are many fans of UI on national stage , bringing up household names of players the others had. Abs for MSU I think it’s love of basketball. ND would be better choice for NIU students over UI or any other B10 school, but even then the number is that big. I think the biggest # is NIU students who don’t give a crap about college sports in general .

I remember during our hot streak that NIU was ~ 30-2 in the MAC. Guess who those two Losses were against.

I am a diehard NIU fan first and foremost, but I do actually root for Michigan on a secondary level as “my Big 10 team”. I also have no affiliation with either school. Huskie fan for years because of a few friends who played for Kill back in the day, grew up and currently live in Chicago suburbs, and my college alma mater (Marquette) didn’t have a football team...Michigan fan because of family lake house and many friends in Michigan.

With that being said...GO HUSKIES, BEAT MICHIGAN!

THE HARD WAY.

Interesting, I never thought about putting any school ahead on NIU. I lived in Oregon for 20 years and rooted for both the Ducks and the Beavers. But when NIU came to town for any sport, I was a Huskie!!!!
Now that I live in Reno, I root for UNR, but when it comes to NIU, It will always be NIU!

I was hoping to catch the NIU at Portland State Soccer match, but my schedule wont allow it. This may be the first year (except last year with Covid restrictions) that I don't get to see an NIU team on the west coast. I'm hoping for a bowl bid out west somewhere so I can keep the streak alive. LOL
Go Huskies.
