Mission to retire during the Wyoming game
Here is the article in the Northern Star:https://northernstar.info/87185/lifestyle/niu-mission-set-to-retire-saturday/

The article says that Mission is NIU’s first live mascot. I guess the NIU newspaper forgot about Diesel. You don’t have to look hard to find Diesel retiring and Mission being the new Huskies mascot: https://ftw.usatoday.com/2013/11/niu-hus...retirement

NIU has had numerous live mascots. When I was in college in the 1980's, the cheerleaders walked around with a huskie. I have seen them in the 1990's and into the 2000's.

It seemed like yesterday Diesel was having fun tailgating and high fiving his fans. Time is moving too fast for many of us.

Somewhere I have a video of Diesel peeing on the giant rocket outside Toledo's stadium prior to the 2013 game...

RE: Mission to retire during the Wyoming game
Technicalities abound...I'm guessing. Mission was funded by the school (the 1st). While there have been numerous Huskies representing the university they were co-opted family pets from Huskies students.

This is our chance. The new dog should be more representative of our big dog statue. Perhaps a spring pig in a Huskie fur coat?

Agreed. I'd love it if they resurrected the tradition but I'm sure finding a dog sled team is no easy task.

Also, is there an heir apparent to Mission? (question directed at the community in general here and not just 142niu or any of the others tagged here)

I seem to recall a little puppy named Mission romping around the sidelines during Diesel's last season getting first paw, on the job training from the G.O.A.T.

Do we have someone for Mission to pass the torch to?

This is really serious stuff.

Yeah, I have no idea what they were thinking when they 1) commissioned that thing and 2) saw it and said...yup...that's what we want.

Seems like they could have had one created that looked like a...oh I don't know....an actual husky?

Doesn't seem like it would have been that hard.

Maybe the Diesel statue could be put there, and Pigdog can be placed, I don't know, in a storage shed somewhere.

Renee Bemis did a pretty darn good job with the statue outside the Chessick/Yordon Centers.

My bad. It wasn't hyperlinked and so I only noticed the older article about Diesel.

So, this new dog is going to be called Mini Mish or will it just be Mission? (Mission II?)

Think since they now have this apparent pipeline of live mascots, will they go the route of naming them all "Mission"?

I kinda liked the variety but I can go with this too.
