A highly unlikely number of their walk-ons just happened to be their county's recipient of a full scholarship to UNL. Throw in their legendary reliance on prop-48s and partial qualifiers, and I don't think their glory years are coming back any time soon.

I could see them leaving for the SEC in some last ditch attempt to get Texas recruits and return to relevance. I'm not so sure the B1G wouldn't hold the door open for them either since the one thing they were supposed to bring to the conference--big time football--has been a failure. They sure as hell weren't brought in for basketball, olympic sports or academics.

i think nebraska basketball is more relevant

FSU's football attendance in 2019 was 54,000 a game. Even in their worst years, Tennessee and Clemson were way ahead of that.

In 10 years, FSU won't be considered the 2nd best public school in Florida, athletically or academically. USF's research output is already higher than FSU. FIU and UCF are in the same ballpark as FSU & rising fast due to better physical locations. USF's endowment will pass FSU's this year.

Yep; sometimes you're a great program and sometimes you just had a HOF coach. FSU is not a blue blood. Bowden/FSU is Osborne/Nebraska. Also similar in that the successor was good but a notch below and the school didn't think that was good enough. UCF's emergence and move to the B12 levels the playing field even further in the state. Tons of competition there once you get past UF.

Nebraska is more of a "program" than FSU.

Nebraska won 2 national titles under Devaney in the decade before Osborne took over. Before that, they went to the Rose Bowl in 1940 and the Orange Bowl in 1954.

Nebraska is also top-10 in attendance. They sold out their stadium against Fordham and Buffalo this year even after 5 losing seasons in a row & losing to a lousy Illinois team in the season opener.

In Nebraska on a Saturday you have two options in the fall 1) Go to Corn Husker game or 2) Watch a combine harvest corn.

You could say the same about any college town. Including Tallahassee. Check that; in Tallahassee they don't even have corn.

And before anyone talks about Florida beaches: Tallahassee is about 45 minutes from a beach. And those aren't the good beaches.

Well looks like the FSU people are already discussing who they might want to replace Norvell.

Keep staring at the wins that will never come Mike cuz it's goin' be a loooong season.

He had the public endorsement of the AD prior to today's game:

Quote:Speaking with the FSU Board of Trustees on Friday, Coburn offered a simple message per Warchant.com.

"On football, I have three things to say: One, we have the right guy. Two, we will improve. And three, we will win," Coburn said. "That’s gonna happen."

Coburn was hired in 2019 and immediately made changes to the program. Willie Taggart was fired after going 9-12 in a season and a half in Tallahassee and Coburn hired Norvell away from Memphis at the conclusion of the season. Norvell is just 3-9 thus far, but clearly Coburn’s confidence hasn’t wavered. That’s significant considering the way FSU’s season has gone.

A valiant effort in a loss against No. 12 Notre Dame on Labor Day weekend was followed by the worst loss in program history, a 17-14 defeat to FCS opponent Jacksonville State. Then came a 35-14 thrashing to Wake Forest. Wake Forest, a team that FSU fans used to not give any attention to until recently.

Fans have come for Norvell’s head and many have pointed out to Coburn’s handling of Taggart as precedence for what to do with Norvell. But it’s not that simple. FSU cannot afford to buyout Norvell and be on the hook for two separate buyouts in the coming years.

Additionally, FSU would have to pay top dollar for the next guy, as firing two coaches midway into their second season does not sound inviting for possible replacements. Simply put, Norvell is here to stay and do his best to turn the program around.

Coburn understands that and knows that the light will shine brighter in the future. Maybe even as soon as 2022. FSU currently holds the No. 10 recruiting class and No. 1 in the ACC, according to 247Sports. The class features the No. 2 overall prospect, cornerback Travis Hunter.

In Norvell I Trust

No way he goes the distance at this point. He might be gone as early as Monday.

FSU is a smoldering crater at this point. It will take some time to turn that ship.

Memphis took/takes a lot of Last Chance U. Kids— great athletes, not the most scholarly and with some baggage off field. I think the admissions into FSU is a little more difficult.

On top of that Norvell’s recruiting connections are in Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee…

History at "Free Shoes U" indicates otherwise... FSU has not been a bastion of "High Character Scholar Athletes" over the years.

FSU just paid $18 million to buy out Taggert two years ago. And $500,000 to Memphis to buy out Norvell's contract. That was cushioned by a $7 million buyout that Jimbo paid FSU (paid by Texas A&M).

Can FSU afford Norvell's $16 million buyout?

True, but compared to Memphis they have a rigid admission process.

Final Season for Ed

This one could be worrisome. They can throw some sick money at Fick, tripling his salary. That could trump Louisiana not having any Catholic schools.

I would honestly be shocked if he went to LSU

Going into the Big 12 with all the momentum we have, we literally can't afford to get outbid by a school like LSU for Fickell. I know we can't realistically offer $10 million a year, but if LSU is offering $8 million for instance, we have to find a way to hit whatever the magic number is to not tempt Fickell to leave. Might be $5 million, might be $6 million, but whatever that number is, it will pay for itself and then some in donor money, season ticket sales, exposure, and bowl/CFP money.

Am I missing the joke? Louisiana is very Catholic. Baton Rouge is about 25% practicing and non-practicing Catholic. The Fickells would have no problems fitting in. That being said, I don't think he takes it.

You may be right. I really have no idea. I just threw that out there because that seems to be one of the main reasons people like to point to why Fick wouldn't leave.

People have their UC googles on if they don't think Fick would strongly consider the 2nd highest paid gig in the country in the best conference.
