UTA achieves Texas Tier One
The State of Texas announced two days ago that UTA has achieved Texas Tier One status by meeting criteria for the state's National Research University Fund. As with eight other universities vying for this, this has been an institutional goal.

UTA joins University of Houston, Texas Tech, and UT Dallas.

The extra $6.2 million annual funding (currently...the state can add to it), while not enormous, is definitely useful as well as flexible.

As with Carnegie R-1, this designation is also about recognition, reputation, and the company you keep.

Not sports-related, but momentous enough to merit notice among our Sunbelt friends.

That seems to be the leader in conference realignment is your academic status, so kudos to you guys.

Being a bit sarcastic, but anything that shows your school is improving is a good thing.

UTA achieves Texas Tier One
Thanks for clarifying. I read the title and assumed “Texas Tier 1” meant achieving proficiency with a six shooter.

RE: UTA achieves Texas Tier One
In October, 2019 the UTA AD and a group of various other interested parties were involved with negotiations to bring football back to campus. Their plan involved hiring Les Miles, former national champion LSU coach.

They almost got it done, but unfortunately, Coach Miles bolted to Kansas, where he accepted the HC job. He flopped there rather spectacularly and scandalously. Some of us felt we had dodged a bullet, but with everything else that's been going on, it's a shame we have seen another two years go by with no visible progress.

I'm not an "insider" regarding the bring-back-football movement, but I keep hearing rumblings that something is going to happen. This year's homecoming (basketball) game and events will include a reunion of the 1981 Southland Conference championship football team. (Some of you may remember that 1981 was the last year the SLC was a D-1 conference, before dropping down to 1AA.)

I'm hoping the BBF Insiders will be leaking out a few details of future plans at that time. But I've been hoping for a long time.....

At least if you do start football you already have a home unless UTA plans to move to a conference that sponsors FCS football instead of FBS.

No No No! The administration has sent muddled messages in the past, except on this subject. They will never go FCS (except transition, of course).

That's what I thought. If everyone sent UTA $20 in Cashapp is that enough to help get football started? 03-lmfao 04-cheers

I would think they have plenty of cash. they currently charge near the minimum of the allowed student fee for sports and I think there are still several natgas wells on the campus. also there are some big pocket donors in the area that are just biding time waiting to see what happens. I was pretty impressed when I saw about 20,000 at globe life park back in may for graduation..so there may be plenty of untapped support out in the community.

To see what happens in regards to what? You guys would have a FBS conference already on lock, it includes a media deal with ESPN that gives exposure, and the bowl lineup for Sun Belt is a good one. I can understand facilities are a big question.

waiting to see what the administration does. there are many alums like myself out there that would commit more money to the athletic department if at some point they decided to put more focus on raising the level of the university's sports programs. It is a direct function of money spent. much smaller schools all over the place are able to succeed at a higher level because their leadership desires to do so. uta is a very large university in a very large metro area and has a large alumni base. the only thing holding them back is the lack of "want to's"

That's awesome for UTA. I think we're getting very close to R1 and hoping it happens in the next cycle. I think it's the amount of advanced degrees holding us back, but that's been going up every year as more programs have become available.

good for you guys. it took an extra year for us because the panic kept the school from graduating enough PHD's last year to meet the required amount.

Yes, good luck with that. I won't be surprised when Louisiana gets re-classified from R-2 to R-1 by Carnegie. It's a little hard to predict with Carnegie. We generally know what they are looking at, but it's not as clear as with Texas Tier One, which is quite transparent.
